Infertility

A little stressed....

I was all geared up for starting IUI with injectables in Jan 2014. I switched insurance plans because one plan covered IUI. Now, I find out the meds are like $2500-3000. Wow that's a lot of cash and it is not covered. My doctor wants me to do IVF but I prefer the IUI with injectables path first. I am really considering that. I would just have to tap my 401k. I switched RE. The only thing I tried in the past was clomid and only did that once.

Re: A little stressed....

  • No defined issue, "unexplained fertility"...DH semen analysis was good, two things was on the low side but doc said she was not alarmed. She also said she didn't think those two things were related to me not getting preg. His count and mobility were high, morph was lower than expected. Plus, my doc wants me to order follistim 600ui qty-5. It's like $750-800/cartridge. I don't get it. Why so much for my 1st time when I am seeing ppl dosage lower than that?

  • Like the above, I feel like we wasted money on a hybrid IUI due to the high dose of drugs I was on. But our diagnosis is very different and we only did that cycle waiting for a med to kick in prior to IVF.

What was your response to Clomid? I think it's pretty aggressive to move to a high dose of injects if your response was good, because Clomid or Femara are so much less expensive. Most RE's seem to recommend the same treatment protocol for 2-3 cycles if there aren't problems.

I switched RE. I only did Clomid in June, no IUI. The few things I remembered was I was monitored on Saturday and there were three follicles. But I ovulated the next night. Long story short - BFN. My new RE really suggested IVF. But my insurance does not cover that so I wanted to do "aggressive" treatment with IUI. I never thought about the meds not being covered. This is still new to me and the fertility prices are so crazy.
  • That's weird the meds aren't covered. Did you call your insurance? I know with my insurance I can only get meds through one pharmacy. If I go through any other pharmacy they aren't covered.

  • Ask about med donor program at RE. And for coupons
    Trying to Conceive Ticker
  • Oh my bad...my ovarian reserve is low. But I cannot remember my number exactly. My 1st RE said that it is low but she have seen ppl get pregnant with my number. I will ask more questions. This new RE had a weird response when I mentioned I wanted to do aggressive cycle with Clomid. She said aggressive and Clomid don't fit together, something like that. As to say, Clomid is a weak alternative.
  • Also, I will look into donor med programs next week.
  • Pvf08 - yes I am trying to get informed. The process is new for me, and am 39, will be 40 in feb. I had 4 m/c in my lifetime. My ovarian reserve is low. But to your point, I will ask why lesser treatment isn't on the table. The nurse told me the meds cost $900. Only to find out I am looking at $2000-2700. Thanks for your response.

Low ovarian reserve is very different from unexplained. Mine is also low, specifics in my signature. I reiterate that I think our inject IUI was a waste of money and that I would have moved immediately to IVF if we hadn't been waiting for my DHEA level to optimize (with supplements). I also suggest you do more research to find the best treatment plan for you. It's hard when the clock puts extra pressure on, but good luck!

  • thanks everyone.
  • So sorry you have to go through IF treatments. The injectable drugs are ridiculously expensive. I hope you RE had some donation meds for you.
