Already had my holiday meltdown! Anyone else?

Ugh. I had a total crying, sobbing meltdown today. It is just a bunch of small things added up- I have had the flu for 5 days, my toddler has a terrible ear infection with a blocked tube and has been screaming constantly for 2 days, the flu combined with toddler means I haven't slept more than a 2-hour stretch all week, I am pregnant and super tired and emotional. My mom is in town and she tries to be helpful, but totally stresses me out and makes me feel like I am losing at life. ("Oh, your couch is so ratty, can I buy you a new one? Yuck, your dishes are all chipped and scratched, your towels look so old, your daughter's shoes are beat up, should we go buy new ones?") DH is a pastor and we have 3 kids under age 6, so we are definitely in a "relaxed" phase regarding how spiffy and fancy our possessions are, but she is clearly appalled by it.
Anyway, the stress finally got to me today and I was sobbing incontrollably! I think everyone is a little afraid of me now ;) Anyone else get their holiday meltdown out of the way early?

  • I just had a bitchy moment. My ILs are coming to town and H told them to leave around 9. If they left then they'd be getting to my house the same time I'd be getting home from work. I freaked out at this thought and made H call them back to have them leave later.

  • Haha, yes @yayksimp, I do let her buy me some new things, but it is exhausting when she visits for more than a day because I feel like she is constantly pointing out everything wrong with our house and furnishings! I try to stay on top of things, but with 3 little kids who are home with me most of the time, our house is definitely not a showplace! she only had 2 kids and we were spaced farther apart and she worked full time so really the kids were only home for dinner & bedtime, plus she had a housekeeper once per week. She just doesn't really have a concept of a normal, lived-in, larger family house where the kids are always around.
  • Over thanksgiving my sis was out (for her usual 2 day stay, which is another pet peeve of mine) and my HB's family wanted to have em for a day, which was totally fine! They were close with my sis before she was married and they love to see her when she's around. Well we found out later that the in-laws were having other ppl over who I am not very fond of (it was not MIL's fault, the other ppl called and invited themselves over). I just cried my eyes out even tho I wasn't THAT upset! Oh well... I just WISH it would've made my sis be nicer to me /:)

  • You should tell your MIL you want a housekeeper for Christmas then she can complain to her about the house! Win win! LOL C an you explain to her that you don't want to have nice things at this phase in your family in anticipation of of them getting broken or ruined? I mean you don't buy a brand new couch right before you get a puppy right? :)  Good luck to you and if you need a good cry, just cry!!
