I'm destined to never leave my bed.....(Rant)

Long story short, the constant burning pain I've had across the middle of my back for the past two weeks isn't just a bladder/kidney infection like I thought (confirmed by urine and blood samples), nor is it likely to be the pulled muscle my OB's nurse originally thought, but is most likely a slipped/bulging disk in my spine.....

Not 100% sure yet as my OB is out of town and the on call OB was the one to see me in L&D tonight, but she seemed pretty convinced based on all my symptoms that this was the case. And to make things even better, if this is what's wrong there is nothing they can do about it since it takes an MRI to confirm it and surgery to repair it, both things that can't be done while pregnant... Yay!

Seriously, can I just pop this baby out already? I don't know how much more I can take at this point...... :(

  • Oh no fun. I've had one of those on a couple occasions. I can sympathize with the pain. :(

  • Oh no that's awful. How far along are you?
  • Yuck!!! I hope getting the bladder infection under control will help this some! It is hard to believe it is almost over when you are in pain and uncomfortable each day! Yesterday was day 92 of bed rest for me and I still have 5+ weeks to go. I want her to stay as long as possible but there are times when I'm just ready to be done. She moved into my pelvis over the last few days and I'm having a pain between my legs, groin/joint that makes walking just impossible without me whining in pain so I can't imagine how you are feeling. I'm sure bed rest doesn't help your back. Hope you are able to find something relieving soon!

  • I'm sure ur in a lot of pain, they can suck. But let me give u a glimmer of hope. About 50 percent of us are walking around with a bulging disc and doing fine. You will have episodes of exacerbation throughout the years but just need to manage it. What is making it 10 times worse is the relaxin in your system and your posture from carrying baby. Yes unfortunately not much can be done until you deliver baby but good news is it may resolve once u deliver baby. Usually only significant disc bulges require surgery, first they will try physical therapy or cortisone injections to calm down the nerves that are irritated (the true cause of your pain). Try this for some relief: while sitting push up on your arms like your trying to lift ur butt off the chair but not so much that you actually do. This should make things feel better, not worse. If it makes things worse, it's not a good move for you (you are doing self traction which i teach my patients all the time, but it should always make things better, not worse!)
Good luck and let me know if you have any questions!

  • I pulled a muscle in my back, which isn't the same thing at all, but my insurance approved me for physical therapy and it's been super helpful. If that's an option for you, it might be worth a shot.

  • I'm 35 weeks.

And that's helpful knowing so many people get it too. It just sucks seeing as I've already been on bedrest since September.

Luckily my insurance pays for everything right now, so after LO gets here I'll be able to have the surgery if needed before my insurance goes up in march, and hopefully my OB can send me to a chirapractor or something for another opinion... All I know is this is the worst pain I've ever been in and I'm getting no relief from Tylenol and heating pads, especially when I start having BH.
  • I hope you can get some relief from your pain soon!
