Anybody clean houses for a living??

Since going from 2 incomes to 1, things get a little tight sometimes, so I've started cleaning houses to make it a little easier on us. I have 2 kids under 2, but hubby works nights so he can watch them during the day. I'm just getting started and I'm unsure on what to charge and I don't want to sell myself too cheap. Does anyone do this and can give me some pointers and examples of what you charge and what work you do? I have interest in a 3000 sq foot home, doing all wood floors, 2.5 bathrooms, and sheet washing for one bed...

Re: Anybody clean houses for a living??

  • My house is 2800 sq ft. My girl comes once a week, and us usually here for 3-4 hours. She sweeps and steam mops all my hardwood, and vacuums the few area rugs I have. Cleans 2.5 baths. Makes beds. Cleans kitchen, dusts, straightens, takes out trash, does any dishes in sink. Charges $60 per visit. This is on the cheaper side for sure. But....if she was more expensive, I would probably only have her come twice a month. By being a little cheaper she is super booked....something to consider.

  • Thanks! That helps! This home would be a bi weekly job.

  • I clean a 2300 sq ft house for 90 a visit, twice a month. Vacuum, shark steam, sweep, dishes, clean kitchen, dust, clean 3 bathrooms and it takes 3-4 hours.

  • I pay my cleaning lady about $20/hour. We have a 920 sf place and it takes her 2-3 hours each time, plus her husband comes once every 4 weeks to steam clean. She dusts every piece of furniture, bookshelves, and picture frames, cleans 2 bathrooms, the kitchen, sweeps, vacuums, and mops, cleans windows, wipes down the dining room table and chairs, including our booster, and makes the beds.

  • Lurker here. I am in a VVHCOL and it's about 250 for 1900 sq ft, one story 3 bed/2 bath. No carpets either.

I took over a home for my mom who used to clean, and I did exactly this size house and these duties (minus taking out homeowners trash and doing dishes), and got paid $65. Occasionally he would ask me to do extra things - one time I cleaned his fridge (shelves, and wiped down the inside), and he paid me a little extra for that.
I also agree with PP's that if it's possible, you should do some research from other companies or websites to see the average of what they charge in your area. It would give a lot of insight as to what you should consider charging.
  • The company we just signed with is charging us $90 bi-weekly to clean our 2100 sq foot home to vacuum, mop the floors, dust, clean 2.5 baths, clean kitchen and make beds. We live in Madison, WI which is a higher COL if that helps.

  • I always give extra for extra duties too. Like I had her do my windows this fall, and paid her an extra $60. She spilt the task into 2 weeks.
