Antidepressants during pregnancy?

Hello,
Has anyone taken anti-depressants during pregnancy? If so, did everything turn out okay with their child, or did you/child have any complications? Very curious mother that has been taken off her 100mg antidepressant medication and is suffering badly.

Re: Antidepressants during pregnancy?

  • My Dr. took me off them and I'm a basket case my husband doesn't want to be around me.  I left a message with the nurse to see if there was another medication with less risks that I could take bu they have yet to find one for me.  hopefully you can figure something out that works for you.

  • Some are considered more safe than others, but yes I am staying on my Prozac through pregnancy. I've got recurrent major depression so I'm at a really high risk for PPD/PPA- and even at my current med level I don't feel happy- just not as anxious/sad as I know I would be if I went off the med.

My OB, MFM, and RE were all okay with Prozac at my dosage considering my mental health history and my psychiatrist is cool with it so long as my other docs are.

  • Thank you. I have discussed this with my doctor and she mentioned that we will take a look at things once I hit the second trimester. The anxiety, depression and stress levels are making me worthless to be around for my husband and 3 year old. I hate feeling like this. My next appt is Jan 2nd and I hope they may be able to do something for me.
  • I was on 20 mg of Citalopram and my doctor told me to stop. My moods are just amplified really bad. He said to keep him updated if I start to get suicidal thoughts. I think homicidal would be more my game haha.

Talk to your OB, they may prescribe something safe for pregnancy, mine did.  It is not safe to be off meds during pregnancy. It can cause more harm than good.  I take 20mg Zoloft and my DS is perfectly normal.

  • You must make sure you are okay first. If that requires meds then do it with doctors supervision.

This. My ob did not want me off my meds because pregnancy can be stressful and the good definitely outweighs the bad in my situation. I did titrate down to a safer dose, but even if I needed more, my ob would be okay with that. I was on the same (Zoloft) with my ds and he is completely fine.

  • I was on Zoloft during my 1st pg, and initially went off my meds cold turkey upon getting a BFP...needless to say, I was a total wreck. My OB/Gyn immediately put my back on my medication and explained that it is much more detrimental to the baby to have major anxiety/depression than to be on medication. I stayed on Zoloft the remainder of my first pregnancy, and DD was, and is, perfectly fine.

This time around, I take 40 mg of Viibryd daily. When DH and I decided to start TTC, I met with my OB/Gyn and she recommended I stay on it, for the same reason she recommended I stay on the Zoloft the first time around - the benefits outweigh the risks.

Your mental health is extremely important and vital to the well being of your baby. I encourage you to talk to you doctor/psychiatrist and find the best treatment available. Good luck!!!

  • I'm on Effexor and 9 weeks preg. My fertility dr and obgyn both had no concerns, saying it's better for me to be healthy/happy during the pregnancy. I just think of all the bad hormones my body produces when I'm depressed or anxious.
  • I switched to Zoloft with my first and continued through her first 2 years. My dr. recommended it because it has the fewest risks and it's OK for BFing.
Definitely talk to your Dr. about this. I can't believe they would take you off of something and not give you any further support.

  • I did not take my antidepressant during pregnancy my first pregnancy, and actually never got back on it after having Kate. I took my anti-anxiety (Vistaril) but only because it was one of my medicines to fend off HG. It was not easy, and I wish I had some advice for you, but all I can do is echo the other PPs and urge you to talk to your doctor - if the benefits of being on the medication outweigh the risk to your LO, it may be time to resume them. I'll be thinking of you and praying for you. I'm so sorry you have to experience this. My heart is going out to you!
  • I'm currently on Zoloft 200 mg and have been on it for I guess 6 or 7 years.  I have my first doctor's appointment with the OB tomorrow and will bring it up with her.  If I get any information that is different from what others are saying, I will definitely keep you posted.  I am very nervous that I might be told to stop the medication because it was the only one that has kept me stable and I don't want to go back to how I once felt before.

    A new adventure
