Multiple C-Section Mamas...Come in

I'm just wondering if there are any mamas on here that are on their 3rd or 4th or MORE c-sections. I'm having my third c-section in 4 years my 1st (emergency in June 2010), 2nd planned in May 2012, my 3rd is scheduled May 6th 2014 and my dr./midwives have asked everytime I go in if I'm getting a tubal. I'm only 29 and will turn 30 in July this year and I'm struggling (this is the only word I can think of) with doing something so permanent. I know that having multiple c-sections are dangerous but I ALWAYS pictured lots of children and I really am thinking we want a 4th to even things out. IF I did I would wait til post op to see what the DR says about my uterous, etc and I would wait longer in between at least 2 years which would put me at 32 for delivery of my last. I have had difficult pregnancies, my DS and 2nd killed my thyroid :) I like to say it was the pregnancy (probably would have happened eventually) but I take synthroid everyday which hasn't affected my pregnancy at all this time. We did have a slight scare this time with getting an elevated result in my quad screen which lead to a harmony test which came back perfectly fine. I just want to hear thoughts from mamas who had multiple c sections would you do it again? Make the same choice knowing what you know now. I would never take the risk unless my dr said it was ok, I have this feeling each time that I am playing with fire...I guess thats nerves, and understandable with a surgery. But that each time I'm pressing my luck...

  • I agree with RNmama12, I know many people who have had 4 sections, including my own mother, and all have been perfectly fine.  This will be my second and final and even thougth I'm certain I do not want to have more children, even I wouldn't do anything permanent like having a tubal.  You can always get something like Mirena until you decide for sure if #4 is in your future :)

  • I'm at the same point as you. Have had 2 c-sec, and though it has not been officially declared yet, this one will be a c-sec as well. I haven't seen an OB yet, just my GP. But I'm unsure if I want to have my tubes tied, and have such a permanent procedure done. I know we are done at 3, and I know I personally can not handle any more c-secs. They are not easy to recover from. And I am totally devastated that I was never able to have a natural birth experience, but that's a different discussion.

I haven't done much research on the different options, but DH and I have had a couple small discussions on what we can do. He suggested that since I'm on the table anyways, I could get a tubal, but that's my decision to make. He also suggested that if I do not go that route that he will be getting a vasectomy. From what I've heard, they are easier to reverse if that's what we chose to do, but I don't think DH could ever be convinced to have a 4th.

  • They asked about a tubal with me as well. I said this would be our last (2nd child), but declined a tubal because I think its absurd to do something so permanent at 25. I also would like to leave the options open, not that a tubal would limit them, to egg donation and surrogacy. If surrogacy does happen, I fully intend to have c sections. If Michelle Duggar(sp?) can have almost 2 dozen kids, with scattered CS's in the mix, any other normal woman could also have the ability to do multiple CS's.

  • My roommate at work (we share a classroom, It sounds weird lol) had 5. Her doctor suggested a tubal after 4. After baby 5, her uterus was in horrible shape apparently, and she got one. The doctor said it was like "plastic  wrap".

  • I think some moms just know it and get a tubal, some moms don't. If you're unsure or aren't ready, then definitely do not get a tubal. There are other options like pp have mentioned. I have a coworker that had 3 csections and wanted a 4th child but her body couldn't handle another pregnancy. She's a lot older and have had complications. It's a doable process, 3 isn't the limit here. I think it's how well your body can take it.
  • I'm only going on my 2nd c-section but one of my good friends from work had 4 in under 5 years. Her dr had to tie her tubes on the 4th because when they did the c-section they found her uterus muscle was separated from the uterous or something, I forget the exact cause but it took them a while to get her bleeding under control and they wanted to make sure she didn't have anymore due to the risks. I think her situation is one of he exceptions though, she kept having Irish twins with some losses in between. If you allow enough time to heal then I would think you'll be fine

  • This will be my third C, my Dr told me that unless he sees a uterine window at delivery, there is no reason I cannot have another if I choose. Nobody should try to pressure you into a tubal, explain your feelings to your Dr, and maybe ask what their specific reasons are for wanting you to get one. HTH!!!

  • This will be my 3rd csection and I will be having my tubes tied during my csection I'm 35 and we are done :)

I also don't want to take birth control or so anything else for "safely" reasons so since I'm having the csection it just makes sense. Good luck on ur decision.

Your hubby can always get fixed and I've heard that it can be reversed.
  • This will be my 5th and I'm also getting a tubal. I'm 37 and Im done having kids and don't want to bother with birth control. After my 4 th section my dr said my uterus was fine.

  • This will be my 3rd and last.  I am not getting the tubal, I will have another Paragard implanted soon after birth. It lasts 10 years and I should be in menopause by then.  (Had one after my May'11 baby and loved it!)  Don't feel pressured to do anything - you get to make these decisions, just make them smart ones!

  • I'm 35 and this will be my 3rd section. Even tho i'm almost positive i'm done, i'm not sure if I want to do a tubal or not yet. Now you've got me thinking.
