Cloth Diapering

Please...troubleshoot with me

DS has been in disposables longer than I would like to admit due to a combination of a yeast rash, eczema and his diapers needing to be stripped. Today he's back in cloth and he looks all rashy again, even up on his belly, which almost looks like it has razor burn.  What gives?  I treated all of his diapers with bleach so I don't think it's yeast again.  Could it be a detergent allergy?  We've been using Tide forever, but his belly looks just like a reaction I had to sunscreen once.  I REALLY want to get back into cloth full time!

  • are you sure the rash isn't actually the eczema?
It could be.  But it's definitely a result of the CDs.  Can wetness make eczema worse?

  • I was slathering him in CJs and using sposies and it was pretty much under control.  His skin is never 100% clear, but it looked pretty good.  Now it's totally irritated.

  • what diapers do you use?  does a fleece liner make any difference?  has he started eating any different foods in the past month--because while they might not be allergies, certain foods can make eczema flare.  the cjs works effectively in disposables?  does it clear it up immediately or does it take a few days?  have you ever tried anything else on it?  what detergent do you use?  does he have yeast anywhere else on his body--neck, skin folds of arms/legs, behind ears?

if nothing else, i'm sorry.  eczema is so unassuming but SO frustrating.

@chickypoo2468 should get in here for this convo too :)
I've been using fleece lined pockets.  Actually he looked better this morning when I took him out of his natural fiber fitted.  Sometimes, I think he might be sensitive to fleece.  He does seem to have developed a sensitivity to suedecloth, even though that was my go-to when he was little.

The CJs seems to work pretty quickly, but it's not working with the CDs.  No new foods. He doesn't have yeast anywhere else, although he still has a little cradle cap, which I've read can be a yeasty thing, but not everyone seems to agree on that.  I use Tide, but I have some crunchy clean and I think I'll try using that in the next load.  You know, now that you mention it, he does have some sort of irritation behind his ears.  It could be yeast.  Could be eczema, too.  I don't know.  It seems to get better when I put coconut oil on it.

  • Did you do a bunch of rinses after treating with bleach?

It could be a bleach sensitivity.  I used oxygen bleach once shortly after we started CDing ( I was silly and worried about stains.  Didn't know about the magic of sunning.) And I didn't get it all rinsed out.  DS's skin was a mess until I realized it and did a bunch of hot rinses.

I'm going to do a hot water strip on them tonight. I put him in another CD and he got even redder. It was awful. He's in a sposie tonight :( I think it's a reaction to something on the diapers. Unfortunately i don't know if it's the detergent, bleach or the washing soda.
  • oy, I hate reading about yeast and eczema.  crappy stuff!!

the hot water rinses should get rid of it.  as red as it sounds, I would lean more toward the bleach or detergent.

    good luck!

  • Mm,if I remember you said you wash the diapers with washing soda right.may be the washing soda is causing him a reaction.

  • The rash looked 1000x better this morning.  I'm still stripping the diapers.  Hopefully whatever he's reacting to will rinse out clean!
  • Of course he was soaking wet and covered in gel beads, though.

  • yay and ugh all at the same time.  how is the stripping going on your cloth?
I took forever, of course, lol!  They are drying right now.  I'll wait until tomorrow to use one.  I'm afraid of putting him in one overnight before I can see if he tolerates them better.

  • Yeah I'd be hesitant too. Did you have lots of bubbles or anything?
I didn't even look.  My washer's lid locks during washing cycles and it takes forever to unlock so I hardly ever check it, haha.  I just ran 3 hot water washes without detergent and then one more with a little bit of Crunchy Clean detergent, which is supposed to be good for hard water.  Fingers crossed!
