Men's fertility & Diet

My husband and I recently decided to start TTC. I mentioned that it is probably a good idea to stop drinking the 2+ Rockstar energy drinks that he downs daily, because it might affect his sperm negatively.
He got a little defensive and asked if there were any studies or proof connected to that. And honestly, I had nothing. Just that they are connected to heart failure.

Does anyone KNOW of the ingredients in those drinks affecting sperm count/mobility?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Men's fertility & Diet

  • Do a search on caffeine and its impact on male fertility. Not certain if the articles are reliable. This is a question best posed to his doctor or yours. Good luck.

Don't worry, I'm working on it.

  • I saw an article the other day about how it's just as important for men to get their bodies ready to conceive as it is for women.  The article essentially said that men should be taking vitamins, watching their diet, getting enough sleep, etc.  I can't find the article though, sorry!

I think maybe compromise and ask him to just drink one/day.  Personally, I think it's more important for the woman to be in better baby-shape, but the man's role is obviously very important too!

  • Maybe he doesn't have to cut it out completely, but cut back? There are so many yucky chemicals in those things. My DH has been working on cutting back on dipping (super nasty), because I want him completely done by the time we start TTC in September. I've read that the chemicals in chewing tobacco can affect sperm, leading to more miscarriages.
  • Caffeine and tobacco etc can affect him in a negative way, but some side advice I learned the hard way when we were TTC our first: Stressing him out about TTC can do more damage than his caffeine habits. This is just my personal experience, but when everything about his day becomes about trying to have a baby that can defeat your efforts before you even begin. When we first started trying my DH felt so much pressure and I wasn't even aware of it. I thought it was going to be fun "trying" but all he felt was overloaded with rules and pressure. Just keep that in mind so you do overload him :)

Sigh. No. I get what you're trying to say, but it's not true.
