  • I like Connor. As for Brianna, If you are pronouncing it "Bri-Anna", Then I would leave it. A girl I worked with had a little girl named Brianna but pronounced it "Bri-Ahna". The spelling drove me nuts. I was always second guessing the pronunciation.

I like Connor and Briana. So I'm split between you and your husband.

ETA: But wait, it actually depends on how you are pronouncing Briana/Brianna -- is it Bree-ANNE-a or Bree-AHN-a?

OP said she doesn't hear a difference between the pronunciations so I don't think your question will have an answer.

  • Team husband here.  I like names that are spelt properly.
    *spelled

I just had to correct, given your statement.

Sorry @sugarland726 and @mrsjenni... but I'm Canadian, we can use both.  :P

In American English, spelt primarily refers to the hardy wheat grown mostly in Europe, and the verb spell makes spelled in the past tense and as a past participle. In all other main varieties of English, spelt and spelled both work as the past tense and past participle of spell, at least where spell means to form words letter by letter or (with out) to make clear. Outside the U.S., the two forms are interchangeable in these uses, and both are common.

But when spell carries the sense to temporarily relieve (someone) from workspelled is the preferred form throughout the English-speaking world. This is a minor point, though, as this sense of spell is rarely used outside the U.S., where it is most common.

Spelled is not a recent Americanism, as many people assume (including some who have commented on this post). Both spelled and spelt are old, and examples of each are easily found in historical Google Books searches covering the 17th and 18th centuries. It is true, however, that spelt was ascendant everywhere through most of the 19th century. This ended when Americans permanently settled on spelled around 1900.

Hmph. Can't argue with someone who clearly has the information to back them up!  ;)

  • @MaryBB77 - thanks!
@peanutmuse sorry but @sugarland726 is right.

To everyone else...I kinda like how this turned into a grammar/language post ;) and the more I look at the spellings I am slowly moving to DH's side.  I decided to google Conner vs. Connor and someone somewhere (I don't remember where) wrote Connor is definitely correct, otherwise your son will constantly be looking like he's trying to con-ner. So we'll stick with Connor.  Lol

::Backing out of thread while shaking my head::

ETA: I do have to add one thing. @wifetomrb101 -- don't you think it's a little odd that several people have mentioned different pronunciations? And that you're the only one who is unable to recognize the difference? I suspect that you have the way that you want to pronounce it so ingrained in your mind that you're not really able to separate that from the alternate pronunciation. Just something to consider...
  • @peanutmuse I think you're right.  FWIW my name is Leanna so I'm just rhyming it with Brianna of course, and having a hard time hearing it pronounced any other way.  I always hated my name's spelling because everybody got it wrong even tho it's spelled exactly how it's said.  People often Liana or Leana or something.  So then I just think either way, Brianna will have to correct people.  But, we do pronounce without an h sound, so then it's probably more natural to spell with 2 n's.
And no, we did NOT pick Brianna because it rhymes with my name.  It's one of the down sides of the name, but we are honoring DH's mom with this baby if it's a girl and this is the only name we could find that we agreed on.  When we wrote out the family names we figured it looked different enough that it should be ok.

I can't decide if I'd like it both Leanna and Brianna (like rhymes with banana) or if I'd think that was too matchy-matchy. Or if I'd find it odd doing different pronunciations, Leanna (banana) and Brianna (like Rhianna).

  • Team husband here also!
