Opinions needed.

I am having such a hard time physically. Headaches, nausea and some cramping/bleeding (have seen my OB about this and it's being watched) I work what's supposed to be part time in a retail store. Since its the holidays I've been scheduled for 30+ hrs when I'm really only supposed to work 20 to 25 max a week (drs orders) I just saw my GP yesterday and she said it might be about time to throw in the towel. My OB doesn't seem to think so. I see both of them (GP more often) since OB is 65 miles away. Anyways I guess what I'm asking is would you ladies just push through or listen to your body? I feel like ill be a failure if I just give up but at the same time I feel like my fellow employees have to pick up my slack and my poor daughter gets a very tired and worn out mama at the end of the day. We could use the extra money (who couldnt? lol) but we can also make it work with dh's income. Just want to hear some opinions other then my family's and thought some of you girls might be able to relate.

  • I would talk to my boss and insist on no more than, say, 20 hrs per week. If they can't accommodate that and you can afford to not work, I'd quit. It's not worth your or your baby's health just for a few extra bucks!

I've tried talking to her and every time she posts the schedule she tells me don't worry hours will go down after Christmas. Idk why I always have to be first cashier when there are a bunch of other employees who can! Lol

  • Not trying to sound like a hard ass, but if you are hired to work 30+ hours but are feeling you cant, then you need to take your leave and be done with it.  This is a tough time of year for retail to be shorting hours for employees regardless of reasons.  I dont think people realize how difficult it is for employers where they can't just hire someone else on to help cover extra hours unless its approved through HR/budgeting, and other employees shouldnt be burdened to work the hours that you can't that may be outside of their normal scope.  Not saying that is the case here, but this is generally speaking.   I truly feel for you and hope it works out, but again, listen to your body and if you've had enough, its time to take your leave.
I get where you are coming from but I wasn't hired to work 30+ hours. In my store that is actually considered a full time position. I also have a doctors note stating that I shouldn't be working more then 25 hours. Thank you for your input!
  • Since Christmas is less than a week away, I would just suck it up and continue to work through Christmas, and then hope the hours go down. If they don't go down after Christmas I would quit. I would insist on more breaks where you can sit down and such. Or ask for a stool behind your cash register. I don't think those requests are unreasonable. But I wouldn't throw away 3 more months of income for just another week. You have already made it work this far, what's one more week?
Those are very good suggestions! Thank you.

If you weren't hired to work 30+ hours, then you definitely have an argument to work the hours you were hired for.  However, your doctors note stating how much you should and shouldnt be working cannot legally obligate employers to adjust your hours, and this comes from someone who has background in HR.

    Good luck in your decision.
