For teachers due in June, our maternity leave cuts into summer so we sort of get shortchanged. Is anyone leaving work earlier? Do you know if maternity leave can start earlier or has to begin on delivery date?
I work in an NYC charter school so probably have different rules but my leave begins the day I leave and I'm expected back 12 weeks later at max (14 weeks if c-section), despite summer situation- so I'll be heading back in September- boo! Woulda made out like a bandit if I were due just a few weeks later! Oh well. But considering our teachers go back to work the first week of August, I get a little time off at the beginning at least. (Our summer is only 6 or 7 weeks). So therefore I'll be working for as long as I can handle before leaving. Due June 7... We'll see how long I last!
I get out June 6 and don't go back until end of August. Due date is June 19. I believe you can use fmla but have not looked into it yet myself. I was just figuring I would be off for summer.
Last summer I worked part time at the animal hospital. This year I will not. Just have the entire summer off. My first one ever!!!

I won't because in order to get paid, I have to take sick days. Since they overlap, I see it as more sick days I can save up with the next. Plus, now with snow days, the year is getting longer, so I might run out of sick days and have to take some time unpaid. The early I'm out, the more days I use, and the sooner I have to go unpaid.
My cousin had her baby in March and didn't go back until the following September (a week or two after school started). All was considered maternity leave that was split in pieces by the summer
I am due June 18th so planning to be out for the summer by the time I have the baby. We don't have any paid maternity leave so anything I take will be FMLA and unpaid. That's being said, you can take FMLA anytime in the first year after the baby is born. I plan on starting my FMLA in August and using It till November 1. I will be paid through the summer since we are paid over 12 months, but then I will not be paid for the time that I am out in the fall. To me it is worth it and we have a little wiggle room financially so I can do it. So basically I won't be going back to work till baby is 5 months old, and I will have a quick thanksgiving break coming up and then Christmas not too far off!
I plan on taking off the beginning of the school year. I am due on the last day of school for students so am hoping I have him a few days late so i don't have to use any days at the end of this year. I'd like to take off the first quarter of next school year so I don't have to do report cards/progress reports.
I am nurse at a school so same rules apply. Since I figure we will be out anyway due to summer, I am not going to start my FMLA leave until the first day we are due back at work (mid august). That will give me a paid summer and then as much paid time off I have when my fmla kicks in. I will end up being unpaid for part of the leave but I figure the time with the baby is worth it.
Teacher in Mass. here. According to my contract if you have a doctor's note, you can miss an extended period of time.. unpaid or using your sick days.
I'm due the last week of school but have a couple weeks of sick days, so I will probably take 2-3 weeks in June before the baby arrives. (Depending how I feel and/or how crazy the kids are.) I plan to convince my doctor that being on my feet all day with no A/C in June in a room full of 14 year olds cannot be best for baby and soon-to-be mommy! (I already asked him and he said if I needed a note when the time comes he'd write one.)
I should have about 11 weeks with baby until the first day of school in September. I could take 8 weeks unpaid maternity time til November but we can't afford it. So back to work when baby's barely 3 months old.
I just subbed for a woman who had the baby in June and started leave in September. She had to use her sick time first but was entitled to 6 weeks unpaid. Every district is different but you may be able to take it when you come back
We can take up to two weeks beforehand, which I will consider since I am due the day after school gets out. Our leave is using your sick days, so if I wanted to, I could take off at the beginning of the school year. Since we are block schedule, I'm going to try to go back part time (every other day) for at least the first quarter of next year.

I've decided to stay at home after baby and because of this, I'm thinking of taking the month of May off bc, well why not! I'm not going back and we're military so I wouldn't teach in this state again!
We get 12 weeks unpaid or with sick days. We get out for summer June 6. I am not due until June 29, so I expect to be frustrated waiting for baby (though it will be nice to rest up and finish preparations). If baby comes on its due date, it will be about 7 weeks when the school year starts. I don't know if I will be able to afford 5 weeks unpaid leave (almost $10K), but I would love to just be a SAHM so I will scrimp and save to make all the time I can get as a compromise.
I see about 500-600 children a week and my ob/gyn is concerned about the grace period (30 days) students get before they need to be fully vaccinated. Since he is concerned, so am I. I don't want to risk exposing myself and then my baby with an illness of that nature. This makes it even more necessary in my mind to find a way to take all the time I can.
When I think about returning to work and leaving baby with caretakers, I just want to cry.

I'm not taking any time away from my class. I WILL work until the last day of school. I think we got the better end of the deal! Boss doesn't have to be upset with us.
