Re: Bouncing a boy name off you ladies

  • The only Noel I know is a girl (pronounced No-elle), so I'd probably assume that.  But that's just my experience.

    What about Nolan?  It's close-ish...

  • It will be pronounced as No-elle his whole life. If you want it as Nole, then spelling it as so may be the better option. As it stands, I am not a fan of the name Nole. Maybe as a middle?

I also agree with the Nolan suggestion.
  • Its not my style, but I don't mind it. Keep in mind, its reads no-elle, so those just reading his name off a list will probably pronounce it no-elle.

  • I agree with those who say if it's spelled "Noel" people are going to pronounce it the traditional way, so your DS would be forever correcting people. If you are okay with it, then go for it, However I am not a fan of the "Nole" pronounciation, personally.

  • I really like the name, but be prepared for a lot of people pronouncing it "no-el".  Your spelling it correctly...but people aren't bright.

  • DS is Nolan so I'm partial to that ;) and agree with the majority that Noel will be pronounced the traditional way. Also don't care for the sound of Nole.

  • I know a guy named Noel. I think I'd go with Noel or Nolan. Nolan is what I would consider as the boy name for noelle.
  • I can't read it without saying No-Elle in my head. So I agree either Nole or Nolan.

Could you use Nolan and use 'nole or noel' as a nick name?

  • I really like Noel. I can see how the spelling would throw people off. Maybe it's better off as a nickname for Nolan or Nicholas or a middle name. That being said I would vote for it as a first name.

I think Noel would be perfect NN For Nolan.
  • I like Noel a lot. I don't really like Nolan. Noel is definitely a name I have heard before, but it's not super common. I'd use it! :-)

  • If you want it pronounced Nole just spell it that way.  He'll end up correcting people all day, every day, for the rest of his life.
  • I like Noel and think it goes really well with Liam.  If you're concerned about people mispronouncing it - which is a definite possibility, but I don't think I'd let it deter me from using the name if I really loved it - Nolan is another fantastic option (and one of my favorite names).

  • It sounds like you really love the band Oasis. Two of the band members are brothers, Liam and Noel. They are well known for having ridiculous feuds. I agree that Nolan is a better choice.

  • I had a teacher (man) named Noel. I like Nolan better. I agree with spelling it differently to avoid mispronunciation.

Okay, I confess, in posting this I was really fishing for how many people would make the Oasis connection!

We thought of the names independently of one another but it dawned on me right away. I don't want people to think we are crazy groupies!

I like Noel, but I don't think I'm 100% on board yet. Nolan is nice, but I just know DH will veto it.

The obvious answer is I should have a girl because we love our girl name.

I don't even know what Oasis is, lol. A TV show, I assume?

Oasis is a band. Hits include Wonderwall and Campagne Supernova. The brothers in it are Noel and Liam Gallagher, hence my naming dilemma!

It's not quite like having naming sons John, Paul, George and Ringo or anything but I don't know if the connection is worth it. Decisions decisions.

  • NMS. I also think "No-elle" when I see "Noel."

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • I don't assume girl or the "no-elle" pronouciation when I see Noel because I think the male version Noel (nole) is common enough now days.

FWIW though, I did think of Oasis right away when you mentioned both of the names.

  • My name is Noelle and I've been called "noll" my whole life lol. So I've had the complete opposite problem. I've also been called "nolly" and "noelle-ee" people are idiots lol but If people know he's a boy, Noel is a boys name, and most likely will correct their pronounciation. I was told by a french guy that Noel is the boy spelling and Noelle the girl spelling (obviously pronounced differently). I say go with Noel if you love it. It beats half these trendy names going around imho and will actually be unique.

  • I like the name and knew someone with it but they spelled it Knoll. I always thought it was cool:)
