Removing Old Furniture for New Nursery

Hi Everyone,

We're turning our current guest room into the new baby's nursery. It currently has a queen size bed with headboard, nightstand, large double dresser with two mirrors that attach to the back of it, and a large armoire. This stuff belonged to my parents in the 80's. It is large and heavy, seriously heavy. Does anyone have some good suggestions to get rid of it. Craig's List, Goodwill? We really just want someone to take it from us. It will take a few strong men to get it out of our house.

I've donated clothes to Goodwill and sold a couple items on Craig's List before, but never anything this large.

Thanks!

Re: Removing Old Furniture for New Nursery

  • I would do craigslist to make some money off it.  even if it is a little bit.  But that way they haul it away.  We did this with DH's furniture from when he was a kiddo.  The things that didn't go we went online to Salvation Army and had them pick it up.  Bummer about this situation is a lot of the stuff was in our garage for about a month before Salvation Army was able to pick up.

  • Have you looked into consignment stores?  They'll try and sell the furniture for you, and take a cut of the sales for their effort.  A lot of times they'll also do the moving and hauling as well.

  • I believe Salvation Army will come pick up unwanted furniture in good condition. You won't get any money but you will get it out of the house (and tax write-off maybe).

We are also making our guest room into the nursery. We only have the queen size bed left in there now but it is our dog's favorite place to sleep so we are feeling sad about moving it. Yes, we are a bit crazy.

  • I'd Craigslist it, and just list it at a "quick to sell" price. And note that they need to come for pickup with transportation. Might as well make a few bucks from it!

  • Salvation Army will pick it up and give you a form so you can claim it on your taxes.

my dog loves to sleep on the bed in our guest room too! I come home and find him all burrowed into the blankets with the pillows all stacked up into a little mountain. he's a little crazy :)

Lots of people leave a bed in the nursery so you can lay in there and not have to go back and forth while baby is really tiny. I don't actually have any experience there since this is my first but I've certainly seen nurseries with real beds in them along with a crib.

  • playingonadream I thought about leaving it in there, but it would really be for the dog. And she has 2 other very nice dog beds in the house. I've got to be strong :)
