Baby Names

Luca

My husband is from Argentina, withe both Spanish and Italian heritage.  We have chosen the name Luca for our son, who is due in March.  My cousin just had a daughter and named her Luca, and my sister is due in 2 weeks with a girl and just told me her name will be Olivia Luca.  I have absolutely no problem with the three children sharing a name, especially as I don't see my cousin more than once a year or so.  However, it does bother me that they have used a masculine name for their daughters.  Is Luca destined to become a girls name?  If my son is the one male Luca in the family, am I sentencing him to a life of teasing?

Re: Luca

  • Luca is masculine. I always think of "Luca Brasi sleeps with the fishes" from The Godfather when I hear it. Very masculine indeed.

  • Behind the name doesn't recognize the spelling Lucca. Where is it from? I've never seen it spelt that way.

Anyway it's sadly the stupid trend right now so I would still use Luca if you like it and I don't think he would get teased since it's widely known as a male name.

  • Luca is such a strong, masculine name-- I hate it on a girl.

I am guessing your cousin and sister have never seen The Godfather?

  • I think it is a great boy`s name and it sounds like it reflects your child`s heritage. I too hate it when people steal names from other languages/cultures and use them incorrectly on children of the wrong sex because they think it "sounds cute".

  • Thank you for all the feedback.  I didn't realize Jennie Garth used the name for her daughter - knowing my sis and cousin that could certainly explain things!  I think we'll stick with the name seeing as it is the one we both love and it goes well with our last name.  I have never seen the Lucca spelling, and worry that would be pronounced Luck-ah by some people.
  • Lucca is a city in Italy, and I think, based on my weak knowledge of Italian, it would be pronounced slightly differently.  I don't think it's related to Luca or would be considered an alternate spelling of Luca in Italian.

Luca is a very nice boy name.  If I wanted to use it, I would not be deterred by its misuse on girls.

Right-- the pronunciation is slightly different.  It's closer to Luk-kah (you sort of linger on the second C).

It's the town in Italy that my paternal grandparents are from.

I also agree about not letting misuse deter you.  It's a great name!

  • I can't believe I'm the first to bring this up: My name is Luca. I live on the second floor. That's lyrics from a song, Luca was a girl. I've always thought it was a nice name, but also only heard it on a female.
Actually, Luca was an abused little boy.

  • Prior to this year, I always associated the name Luca with the Suzanne Vega song about the little boy, as mentioned above.  Yes -- the Luca in that song is a boy, not a girl.

I teach a boy Luca this year.  He is absolutely one of the nicest, funniest, sweetest 8th grade boys I've had the pleasure of knowing.

To me, it's a boy name.

  • Luca is all boy to me. :/

  • I love Luca on a boy, it was on our short list! Definitely NOT girl and I don't see it becoming popular on girls list. Every name has a few of the opposite sex but this one I doubt will go beyond a few. Stick with Luca! :)

  • It irritates me to no end that this is being used for girls. This is a masculine name.

Also, Luca on E.R. was Croatian & it was his 1st name, spelled this way, I believe.

The character on ER was spelled Luka. He was Croatian.

ETA. Sorry I should read all posts. I am due in April and we are naming our little boy Luka.

  • Hillary Duff named her son Luca, but I don't think she is relevant anymore.
