Newbie...please HELP!

I'm thinking about staying at home after LO is born. With DS1 we didn't CD at all. Now that I will be at home, I'm really considering. We live in a small town and don't travel too much besides trips into town and grocery store. Occasional trips to go shopping 1 hr away. I have been looking at kelly's closet trying to read up on everything but it's all overwhelming.

I would like to newborn CD. I've heard good things about the blueberry CD. I was looking at the BB one size deluxe with snaps. I see you use inserts with these. Do you just wash the inserts when messy and the covers when needed? Also, I don't see where you can purchase more inserts. If these are one size that should last from newborn to 35lbs, how many of the diapers and inserts would we need?

Also I saw these Trend Lab ones on zulily. Are these the same idea? Any good? https://www.zulily.com/p/navy-all-in-one-cloth-diaper-64825-1171278.html?pos=10&e=1&age=infant+(0-24m),toddler+(2-4yrs),kids+(5-9yrs),preteen+(10-12yrs)&ns=ns_009054962

Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!!

  • Lil joeys get good reviews, but seems like babies outgrow the absorbency pretty quickly. From my research it seems like blueberry simplex newborn gets the best reviews. Kawaii P&NS are a pocket diaper, and a lot of people say they for a newborn and a lot longer than most newborn diapers.

RaR newborn diapers are really tiny. Most average sized babies grow out of them fast in both size and absorbency. Blueberry NB simplex are great, and fit longer than most NB all in ones.

  • I had some Trend Lab diapers, and they were awful!!! They put microfiber directly against baby's skin, which is a huge no-no.

I had a few Lil Joeys when DS was a NB. They actually worked out well for us, but he outgrew the absorbency before he outgrew the actual diaper. Also, unless you find them used, they can make for an expensive NB stash if that's your whole stash. Blueberries are fantastic (altho I haven't used them for NB yet...just the OS ones when he got older) but can also be expensive.

I am building a NB stash right now. Most of it will be prefolds and covers, but I will also get some fitteds from GMD, some Blueberries pockets or AIOs (for DH and my mom), and probably some Kawaii Pure and Naturals (at least I think that's what they're called). The Kawaii's are liked a lot here and are pretty inexpensive. The only downside I have found so far is that they're made in China. (A lot of CDs are made there, but the more reputable companies have some kind of certification that says they meet certain workplace standards.)

  • I recommend Grovia, trend lab are very cheaply made. Check on EBay for used grovia or go to Gro-via.com. The have newborn and hybrid that grow with baby. I have hybrid.
  • I agree to stay away from Zulily for diapers.

For the NB stage we used prefolds and covers. Prefolds are amazing at containing NB poo. We used Rumparooz NB covers (not the lil joey AIO). My NB stash was 50% snaps, 50% aplix. I found the aplix to be easier in the middle of the night changes when you're a zombie, or for when hubby was changing (seriously, snaps trip up many men, for some reason). Also, since NB dipes aren't used for all that long, the aplix holds up very well and there's not much concern for aplix breakdown.

When we moved up to OS, we have Best Bottoms (with the inserts- LOVE the stay dry inserts), and Blueberry coveralls (which run very large and will be better once my babe is bigger/toddler, or over a bulky fitted).

Are you asking about the Blueberry or Best Bottom inserts, since you said BB? Inserts that are stuffed in a pocket diaper, like the Blueberry deluxe pocket, are taken out and washed (along with the entire diaper). Best Bottom inserts (which I refer to as BB, but I didn't know if you meant Blueberry or Best Bottoms), can be removed and the cover can be wiped and reused if the cover did not get dirty between changes. Best Bottom inserts come in 3 sizes (small: birth- 14 lbs; medium: 11-22 lbs; large: 16-35 lbs). My OS cover stash is 2/3 snaps, 1/3 aplix. Snaps hold up better and I prefer them, but I have aplix for daycare and family that watch LO.

I think it's worth CD'ing from the NB stage. You would be amazed at how many disposables you go through in just a few short weeks, and NB stashes are (relatively) cheap to build.

  • Thank you JEPES1348!

I was referring to blueberry as BB. I looked up the best bottoms inserts.

With the RR covers, what prefolds and flats did you use with those? And did you use a snappy?
With the newborn flats and prefolds, we could just was the flats and prefolds instead of the cover everytime or does the cover need washing to.

I plan to EBF again so I hear washing the poo down the toilet isn't necessarily necessary..

  • We used Bummis NB and osocozy prefolds. We did snappi most of the time. The RaR cover does not need to be washed each change if it did not get dirty.

And, yes, NB poo is water soluble and can just get thrown in the diaper pail and then wash without any spraying/rinsing needed. You'll need to rinse/spray poo once LO starts solids.

Thanks! I read some not so great review on the osocozy prefolds. When you used these prefolds and a newborn cover, did you just fold the prefold and place it in the cover or actually fold around baby, use snappi, and a cover? Sorry for all the Q's!
