Why are names so hard :(

We can't decide to agree on anything. I LOVE the name Sutton. He loves Avery. So I thought of Sutton Avery, and he was all for it till now. "That's weird" is what he says. His name is Rhett, and that's different. So I wanted a different name for our daughter.

What do you ladies think?

  • Hahaha I know! I'm the same way! It's so hard :(@biggerinreallife
  • I feel the same way :( I'm counting on just "knowing when I see her" but if that doesn't happen then I guess I'm screwed !!

I read your post unsure if you were naming a boy or a girl until you got to the end, so I would try to include at least one non-unisex name in there. If I read that name on my class list I would have to guess boy or girl and cross my fingers and hope I got it right. Sutton seems more boy to me but Avery would lean girl slightly, so I would be confused. Between Avery and Sutton I prefer Avery but I think it's actually fairly popular right now. Nameberry has some fun lists of names if you are looking for more ideas.

  • Those names are definitely my style and I like them both! Although, I think Avery Sutton flows a bit better. Is that a possibility?

  • NMS, but Avery Sutton definitely has a better flow to it.
  • I feel you on the whole "Names are hard" thing...
My husband is DEAD SET on Lucy Rosana...I'm not in love with the name...
I like Amelia Rose, he is very "Meh" on it...
I think we will just name her "It" and let her choose the name she likes when she is older ;-)

As for your names, I agree with PP that Sutton sounds more like a boys name to me, but I do like Avery or Avery Sutton as a compromise. Sorry I am not of more help...good luck.

  • Really? I don't think it sounds boyish at all lol. My brother seems to think Avery is boyish, which I don't see that either. Saying it out loud Avery Sutton actually does sound better.. I just don't want her going to school and having three more Avery's in her class. I don't want something off the wall, but I don't want something too common either.
Ugh. F this. Lol it's so hard :( boys are so easy! Girls are tough.
  • Names ARE hard. It took a hard and fast labor for me to "win" the name battle we were having w/DS, and even then we were down to 2 names on our short list...we decided to just wait to see what he looked like before settling on a name...my name won. :) So this time DH is insistent that he have the "final say" in what we name DD, though I get to choose the spelling, and her middle name...though we're struggling with finding the perfect first name for her that isnt too common, but not "youneek" with a capital Y...UGH. SO frustrating!

Avery is rising in popularity but it is not insanely popular. According to Baby Name Wizard it is only #38 in the country, so your not talking top ten. I sincerely doubt she would end up with 3 Avery's in her preschool class :-) I know your pain though, the name DH likes is gaining popularity and then I finally found a name I like and it is rising too. Girls names are hard. We have been settled on a boys name for years so it would have been SOOO much easier. Que Sera Sera.

  • I think I'm gonna echo PP and say that I lean toward Avery Sutton. I am admittedly not very familiar with the name Sutton, but it did strike me as more masculine. Even putting that aside, I do think Avery Sutton flows better.

  • Names are hard, and it's crazy to think that we're naming a human being (and not a pet).  The good news is that even though names seem like a really abstract concept NOW, when they are attached to a baby they start to make sense.   I would try not to stress the name too much.  If you can agree on something or reach a compromise, then go with it.

  • I personally like Sutton Avery! It's super cute. But I agree with you. Names are HARD, especially when two people have to agree on the same name. Good luck!
  • I've actually had the names picked out for my children since I was 18.  I heard the names and loved them.
  • I'm with these ladies, I thought you were having a boy at first with Sutton. Avery I've heard for both. If you are in U.S. you can check the social security website for your state and by year for top names. I didn't see Avery on any of those in the last 5 years so I think you are safe that there won't be any others!

  • No help but I just wanted to say I love the name Sutton!

  • I think Sutton Avery is awesome! I don't think boy name. I thought of Sutton Foster she is on broadway/a dancer and was the on Bunheads (show was cancelled though). I'm the opposite on here though as I would think boy if her first name is Avery. I agree girl names are WAY hard. My name is Brandyn and I want a great name for my daughter and I don't want her to share her name with anyone in her class either, as I never had to! We have a different name for our LO and I am really excited about it.

Also, 15 years ago my mom named my sister Jordyn and it wasn't popular then, now there are girl Jordyn/Jordan everywhere. We can never guarantee our kids names don't become popular one day.
  • I have been fighting with my hubby over our sons name. So I compromised and we picked the ONLY NAME we agree on. I'm bummed I didn't get my first couple picks but I was sick of fighting over it. :) we are going with Alexander. It's really growing on me. Maybe if you can't agree do what we did pick different names until you agree?
  • I agree with PPs.  I like Avery Sutton better, and I also agree that if I heard the first name of Sutton, I'd think boy.  It is a great name though!
