Worried.. And on suboxone!

I'm 20 and 6 weeks pregnant. I had been on 16mg of suboxone for about 9 months now. The day I took my pregnancy test & it came back positive I majorly cut down. I'm only taking a quarter of the pill a day, which is about 2mg. I want to completely stop taking it but am fearful withdrawl witll cause me to lose my baby ... Also if I tell my doctor at the clinic I'm pregnant he will kick me out because he doesn't prescribe subutext for some reason :/ I don't have my first prenatal appointment until January 8th, I wish it was sooner! Also I have been pregnant once before but did not have the baby because I was so young... I'm worried that will have an effect on my baby now .. ANY feedback is helpful :)

Re: Worried.. And on suboxone!

  • I've been calling around everywhere, no doctors around where I am prescribe it! They all recommend I switch to methadone but I don't feel comfortable starting a new drug while pregnant. I have been considering going to detox for a week and getting a taper of subutext so I can be off it when I leave there. When I called to make my appointment I let them know and asked what I should do, the lady I spoke with (who I believe was just the secretary) said I would have to talk about that with whoever is prescribing the medication.

  • I am not sure about the medication stuff but your previous termination will have no effect on your current pregnancy.

I'm 23 and 32weeks4days pregnant. I've been on Suboxone for over a year now. I started on 12mg a day. My sub doctor recommended cutting back very slowly. I got to 2mg and actually just took my last dose Sunday evening. My OB was surprised that my plan was to stop it before the baby came because in his experience mothers stay on it throughout their entire pregnancy. (Just to let you know some different perspectives I've come across.) My regular OB did send my to a high risk doctor just to be cautious because they didn't have any experience with Suboxone and the class drug it is. But my baby is perfect! He's been growing right on track the entire pregnancy (1 week ahead at this point which is perfect.) Heartbeat is always right on track. His anatomy scan showed all organs and his skeletal structure were great.

I don't want my baby to be born with this drug in his system and hate that the plan my doctors have laid out have brought me so far into my pregnancy before I stopped. However, with that being said....I was planning on starting the procedure to come off of Suboxone before I found out I was pregnant. I was mentally ready to no longer have that crutch. If you are not (I'm not saying that you aren't, just throwing it out there for arguments sake,) you and your doctor have to discuss the whole "do the benefits outweigh the risks" theory. It's much more important that you stay clean. No matter what way you look at it, being closely monitored on a low dose of Suboxone is better than getting back into abusing opiates.

Feel free to PM me! You're the first momma I've come across on this board that is on Suboxone. Good luck to you and congrats on your pregnancy.

Edit: Just wanted to add that I am obviously not a doctor and of course just because something worked for me doesn't mean it will for you.

  • I would try to at least talk to your OB sooner given the circumstances. I do not advocate keeping the information that you're pregnant from your prescribing doctor. That sounds like a relationship built on trust and purposefully omitting that info seems like a violation of that trust. I'd be upfront with that doctor about your concerns and perhaps he or she could also do something to get you seen by an OB sooner to make a plan for treating you during pregnancy.

  • You need to be honest with your healthcare providers. It's the only way they can help you. In my state, pregnant, opiate-dependent women receive immediate, preferential tx to ensure the health of the baby. It would be unethical and probably considered malpractice for your current provider to "kick you out" without another plan in place.
  • I have been on suboxone since 2005, and found out today (from my sub doctor, even!) that I am 8 weeks along. He switched me to subutex immediately. I plan to stay on right through my pregnancy. I just don't feel comfortable with going through a detox with a baby inside, as I have heard that that is worse for both of us..!

I hope the OP was able to get some good help..! Let us know how you're doing! !
