High-Risk Pregnancy

In Vietnam, bleeding at 5 wk 4 dy. went to hospital and they say threatened abortion?Help :(

I'm in Vietnam for a work trip with my husband and son. I found out that I was pregnant on my flight out here last week. Two days ago I started spotting and then more bleeding with some tissue . Not soaking pads. I'm RH- and so to be cautious I went to the local hospital in search of a Rohgam shot. Didn't know if I needed one. Found out they don't have it here! I saw a gynecologist DR and they didn't do any blood work but she did do a outer and inner u/s. She said there was three things she saw. Two sacks ( one empty and one right on track) and a bubble she called the "threaten abortion". What dose this mean? She proscribed me Progesterone and I stated taking it yesterday but it is making me feel sick and jittery. So I'm stoping it. I'm scared and I don't know what to do or how to feel. I will be back In the states next week. Has anyone had a something like this happen to them?

  • Bleeding in early pregnancy is called a threatened abortion. That's just the medical term for a threatened miscarriage. The bubble was probably a SCH- basically a small pool of blood in the uterus. They can and often do resolve on their own- but they cause bleeding in early pregnancy.

Progesterone is very commonly prescribed for situations like yours- I personally wouldn't stop it until you can get back to your regular doc. It does no harm to you or the baby but if your progesterone levels are low it can help support them until the placenta kicks in at 10-12weeks. I've been on progesterone support for all of my pregnancies,

  • I agree with everything PP said, especially about the progesterone. It's crucial that you continue taking that. I know it makes you feel crappy, but it could save your pregnancy.

All of this.  They use the term threatened miscarriage or abortion because often they don't know why you are bleeding, and you "could" miscarry.  However I've been given that term twice for bleeding (two seperate pregnancies) and it never turned into a miscarriage.  I agree with PP that it does sound like an SCH, and can resolve on its own.

Definitely keep taking the progesterone....if your progesterone is low, it can keep you from miscarrying if you started it in enough time.  Even if your progesterone isn't low, it cannot hurt, you can never have too much.  Good luck!

  • I agree with everything everyone else said. I also want to add, try to get in to ur dr or go to the emergency room if you can't get in asap because you do need rhogam. Thats a shame they don't have it in vietnam.

  • I was under the impression that Rhogam isn't as important after the first pregnancy. Is this wrong?

  • Its important for every pregnancy. Then once baby is born it depends on baby's blood type to if you need it after.
