Tonight was my first PIO injection and I was pretty scared. When we first started IVF way back when my DH had to coax me for an hour before he gave me my subcutaneous shots. So that gives you an idea of my fear level. Anyway I did really well staying calm and iced before hand. When it came time I didn't feel a thing except a small poke. It was so small that I had to ask DH if it was in! (He lied and said no... LOL)

My question is, does it get worse over time? Because this really was nothing at all. He massaged for a few minutes after with a warm facecloth and I've been sitting on a heating pad for a half an hour now.

I've never done PIO, so I don't know (I've always had to do Endometrin... vag supps... yuck). But wanted to say good job!! Good luck moving forward!

I am lucky and get to do PIO and supps.  The heat and massaging really help keep the muscle from knotting up and getting sore.  I also found that getting up and walking around help too.  The few times I didn't get up and move around, I was sore the next day.

Glad you posted this. I will be starting PIO on Friday and am so scared. Glad to hear it wasn't so bad.  I have no idea how to do it yet since meds are coming on Thursday. I wish I could just take crinone but RE says PIO is better for FET.

PIO scares me to death. I have a few weeks before I have to do my first PIO inject. Why why why does PIO scare everyone??

I've been on PIO shots for about two weeks now.  They aren't so bad.  I don't ice, heat or massage.  I just prep myself for a bit of a sting.  Some shots are a little worse than others and some I don't feel at all.  I have to do PIO shots every day and Estrogen shots every third day until my 2WW is over.

I did them for IVF#1 and was scared too.  They are not bad.  I didn't ice...just massaged afterwards and then kept moving....i.e. walking, doing laundry, etc.  My husband was more nervous to have to give them to me, but remember to put your weight on the leg NOT getting the shot in.  It allows the muscle to be relaxed.  You'll do great and in a week will be like "what was the big deal?"

I will be doing them again for the second FET in jan. I find that my body starts to getting used to if after the first week or so. It's sore the first few shots and then they get easier. For sure I always do the heating pad after. The times I don't do it I knot up bad!!!

Okay full report here: Just got my first PIO inject about half hour ago.  I watched a video on youtube by the Sher institute.  I wet a wash cloth and then microwaved it for a minute. I applied it to the area.  DH prepped the needle. Today I started with 1/2 ml and tomorrow and onward will be 1 ml.  I laid down and DH administered the shot. Right before he did it I was laughing and crying, it was weird.  He then massaged the area.  Honestly it wasn't bad at all. A little sting in the beginning.  I am keeping pressure off of it right now and leaning on my other side while sitting on the couch.  I hope tomorrow with the higher dose its the same feeling.

Good discussion going on here about PIO. The first week or so wasn't bad at all for me, I iced and massaged after. No lumps or pain really. However, I am really starting to get quite sore and even having some pain (just in general, not from the shot itself). I think that's because I haven't been using heat. Guess I thought since it started out okay, I didn't really need it, but boy am I going to need to start!

However, I'm in my 2ww and wanted to double check that a heating pad would be okay to use during this time period after the transfer..........

congrats!! I only did PIO for about 3 weeks, and was also SO nervous!!! It really is not bad at all!! I didn't get sore or have any reaction fortunately. After the three weeks I was a little tender but not bad! Good luck!

Yes, a heating pad is okay to use, my nurse said that if you are icing then you should sit on heat for a little bit afterwards. I noticed that the longer I sit on it the better. So usually I heat for 30 minutes or more, on the couch watching tv/reading.

For me, the needle going in doesn't hurt a bit. The actual muscle starts to get sore an hour or so after (like a really good glutes work out) and it hurts to walk a bit.

The heating pad before and after is the key (my re says only heat, no icing)... The heat numbs the skin before the shot and soothes the muscle after. The few times I didn't heat, it was painful and my muscles hurt for days! In fact I have two black and blue marks on my tush right now but they don't hurt and I'm convinced it's bc of the heat.
