First Prenatal Appt at Almost 10 Weeks

When I called to make my appointment they told me the first they had available is in Jan. I asked if it was normal to wait so long and they said it is fine but... is it normal?

Reading articles, it seems like it should be sooner but, of course, that is Google for you. I am just nervous because this is the first time for me and I think it would make me feel so much better to go to the doctor and know everything is ok. It really doesn't even feel real for me now.

I am wondering if I should try to get to another doctor sooner?

Re: First Prenatal Appt at Almost 10 Weeks

  • If you want to find a different doctor you can try, but with the holidays you may run into the same issue. I think 10 weeks is perfectly fine for a first appointment.

  • Personally, I wouldn't be happy with waiting until 10 weeks, but that's just me. It is perfectly normal, though. If you lurk around, you'll see that some people have to wait much longer!

  • Yes, 8-10 weeks is normal. The people who go very early tend to be those who have a history of loss or have been doing fertility treatments. If there's no reason to believe you have an issue, your appointment time is fine.

  • Mine sees me at 8 to 10 weeks. Before that I see the RE but if I didn't have issues 10 weeks would be fine.

  • Thank you so much! I am getting in my head worrying that something is wrong or I am doing something that will harm the baby. What a confusing time.
  • I had my first appt yesterday and I'm 12 weeks...
  • With it being close to the holidays it may be hard to find a doctor to take you in before the first of the year.  I called 4 different offices and all had the same week available but nothing sooner.  I got lucky and had a cancellation come through to where I can go in at 7 weeks, but I have a health condition that needs to be looked into.  10 weeks is ok though, but if you'd like to go in sooner you can try calling back to see if any cancellations have come through.  But if I were you, I'd try and stick it out til your appointment because you will have a better chance of getting a clear ultrasound and heartbeat :-]

  • If you are not high risk then 10 weeks is the norm. I went in at 4 weeks to confirm and then I had an appointment at 8 weeks for the pelvic exam and internal ultrasound to confirm due date. However, not all doctors do an internal ultrasound and will wait until 12 weeks to do a normal ultrasound.

With my DD and this pregnancy my first appointment was/will be at 8-9 weeks. Like others have said, my doc does not see patients before that unless there is a reason to (history of loss, bleeding, pre-existing condition that can affect pregnancy).

Eta: I don't think 10 weeks is unusual at all, especially during the holidays.

  • I just got mine for tomorrow, I'm 10 weeks and the office didn't seem concerned at all.  :)
