Western NY'ers

Ladies, do we believe all the hype about the mega-snowstorm coming through? I am not sure if it's due to affect Rochester but for those of us further west/south in the Buffalo region, they are saying over the next 36 hours anywhere from 9-18 inches. I would love to get snowed in after work (I get done at 6pm) with a warm cup of cocoa while I finally get my act together and put these baby things where they belong. What things do you like to do when it's mega-snowing?

Re: Western NY'ers

  • Eh, I don't think it will be quite as bad as they are saying. This lake effect crap is pretty unpredictable. Even if it is really terrible, I'd be at home anyway with DS. If I have the energy for it (and it isn't too ridiculously cold) I'll take him outside and let him play in the snow. He'll love that. One of his favorite words is "outside" and he's recently started saying "snow" and "boots" so it would just tickle him to pieces to go play in big piles of fluffy snow.

The big question will be my DH. Because of his job he doesn't really get snow days. SOMEONE has to be in the clinic, and I'm just hoping that if the weather is super bad that it doesn't have to be him. Both he and his counterpart live in the Southtowns so it's going to be equally rough travel no matter which one goes in to work. At least DH is getting his snow tires put on this afternoon.

  • It doesn't appear to be hitting my region, but I don't get any lake effect snow where I am. All the weather alerts seem to be for Buffalo and Batavia. I don't seem to be getting any for Rochester at this point. Hope everyone stays safe!

  • For Syracuse, it's tomorrow- Thursday we are watching the lake effect. Only a trace -2" for tonight....so we will see tomorrow how it pans out!
  • Ooooo I didn't hear about this. I better check in with DH's parents (they are right outside Batavia). We're in CT now and only got about 3 inches so it's just enough to be pretty and not annoying. Good luck ladies! IGina -  hope you're able to get snowed in so you can do all the baby things.

  • Oh I don't even have time to panic about weather on top of the rest of my "Holy Shit this baby is coming soon" panic!

I will be exchanging things I got from my registry tonight as well as other errands I have to do but I don't think we're getting much in the way of a storm in Rochester.  Stay safe everyone!

  • @moosebaby2011 I hear you about your husband and clinic - I have patients tomorrow and I'll still have to go in, but if everyone cancels ill get to go home early! The other thing I am going to do is make snow ice cream @arrgcr if the snow allows!! Thanks for sharing your secrets last week!

  • Leroy was beginning to get shit-stormy around 4:30 when I left. I hit Chili and it was nice and calm. Anytime they talk a storm up it's either 400% worse or not even close to being bad.

  • I am not from that area. I am partly jealous of you guys, I love snow! At the same time it makes me kind of nervous and I wouldn't mind not getting much snow until after I deliver because I live 35 minutes from my hospital in good roads. We have only gotten a dusting but it is butt cold here!!

I grew up in Buffalo and got stuck at school in that infamous snowstorm back in 2000 or 2001 that hit in the middle of the day. I went to school in the city and lived out in the burbs and there was no way in hell I was attempting that drive home so I stayed put at school.

I definitely believed all the hype from there on out! Glad to be out of that region :-) Lake effect snow is nuts!

@amt0312: Was that the Thanksgiving one? Because I lived on campus for that one and almost didn't make it home for break because so many of the roads were closed. Plus, I had strep throat and couldn't get to an open pharmacy to get antibiotics. It sucked, big time.

There was another one a couple years after that right around Christmas. I still lived in the city of Buffalo and got stuck in my apartment by myself for 3-4 days. It also sucked.

But... I have to say, when WNY gets big snow people are very quick to help each other out. It's one of the things that I like about living here.

  • I'm sure all of the Buffalo-Rochester people have seen this NOAA study. It floats around on FB every year:

    https://www.currentresults.com/Weather-Extremes/US/snowiest-cities.php

It lists the top ten snowiest cities (with >1 million metropolitan population), and Rochester is #1 by more than 12 inches yearly. I know most people associate Buffalo with snow, and a lot of people are surprised that it's behind Rochester in the #2 spot by a decent margin. And then #3 (Cleveland) is almost 80 inches behind Rochester. Crazy.

  • @peanutmuse People don't believe me when I tell them Rochester and sometimes Syracuse get more snow than Buffalo. We do get our fair share, but it is not the arctic out here!

  • @gina0485 -- now you have proof, at least for Rochester. :)
  • it stopped already! that was a major disappointment.

I typically like to just lounge around w/ snacks and tv and what I'm doing right now is not much different...watching VS fashion show while eating brownies that I just baked topped w/ a chunky slice of (Friendly's) jubilee roll. I am so happy right now! ;)

  • Well, I guess you could say we're getting some snow. This picture was taken at 1:00 this afternoon. My DH had shoveled off the deck before he left for work this morning:
