How to explain BF

So I went shopping with my Mom today & of course before we left I made sure DS was nice & fed. He had lots of BM and some cereal and apple sauce. Once shopping, my Mom kept "hinting" that DS needs a drink of water or juice because he MUST be thirsty. I BF on demand and know that he can go a comfortable 2 hrs in between feeds. Who knows, maybe Im wrong here, but I thought I'm supposed to just BF him because babies don't need water/juice right?? How do I tell her that DS is just fine and doesn't need all these extra things right now? FWIW, she only BF me for 3 months & my brother for 6 months so I don't think she really gets it.

Re: How to explain BF

  • I dont know how to explain it to her but I guess I would just mention that lo goes this long at home & that lo is just fine. Or mention that you have discussed it with the dr & everything is ok to go 2 hrs.
My mil breastfed her boys 6 weeks each & she thinks knows everything about it.
    Good luck!

  • It's a Grandma thing. They just want to be helpful and feel like they are able to help you with your LO. Probably just her way of trying to show this. My stepmom does this kind of thing all the time. i just have to remind myself that it's coming from a good place. :)

    Perfect, thanks!!

She always gives him a look of pity when I say no to something like I'm doing something wrong. Even when explaining to her that jackets are not safe in carseats she acted like I was nuts.

I am a researching/linking nut so here's one on the car seat issue for you. With unsettling pictures just to help convince mom. https://thestir.cafemom.com/baby/149235/the_important_winter_car_seat

Ugh that made me cry. Poor baby :(

  • FWIW my pedi actually asked that we not give DD any juice for the first 5 years.  Something about it contributing to childhood obesity and deterring children from learning to drink water for thirst.  I am ok with it because I'd like DD to learn to like and request water anyway instead of juice.  I do offer water every now and then and DD will usually take a sip.  Once she even refused her formula but drank 2 oz of plain water after her puree (and it wasn't a salty puree - it was homemade).
  • We give our guy some water in a straw cup when he is eating solids, but other than that, he only gets breastmilk. Most pedis now say that kids should not have juice until they're 3? or 5? or ever. Unless it's a one-time thing for constipation or something like that. You know what your baby needs and I don't think you should have to justify yourself to her! You seem like a pretty blunt person, so I would be polite but upfront about it if she really needs to know. That's how I try to be with my MIL, anyway, and anyone else who tries to meddle !
