We're not very into the decorative baby stuff but enjoy feeling prepared. We'd like to start buying diapers as early as makes sense. I'm 13 weeks and had a good NT scan.
If you buy them off a registry from BRU I think you have like 9 months to return them or something like that. I know it's more time then a regular purchase.
I'm going to buy a couple of packs a week or two before LO gets here, but I don't plan to stock up till after I know which diapers work best. Not all diapers suit every baby. We learned that the hard way with DS. And I actually probably won't really "stock up" at all. I have all my diapers delivered through Amazon's discounted Subscribe & Save program combined with Amazon Mom, so I'm usually only a week or two ahead. We don't have room for stacks of diaper boxes here.

We don't stock up. You never know how long your baby will be in what size or what will work best for you. I don't like dealing with returns so I buy a pack of newborns and just pick up everything else as needed. DD was in Newborn diapers for the first two months. DS was in them for about a week. Not really necessary to stock up IMO.
We never stocked up. MIL did for us-and we ended up with a bunch of diapers that leaked (Huggies) and caused diaper rash (Pampers Baby Dry). Because we had already opened the HUGE boxes of each brand, we couldn't return them. Another huge box was no longer carried where she bought them. What a waste.
Why not just set aside a few dollars a week instead?
Since I know what worked for my son and my daughter, my guess is the same will work for this one. I only got some already because of a BRU black friday sale, I got three boxes, I think size 1, 2 and 3. I will use swaddlers for newborn and part of size 1, and we like parents choice after that best. I'll stock up a bit, but not too much. You never know when they will grow out of a size. I know that size 3 lasted a bit longer for my kiddos than 1 and 2, and size 5 forever it seems. That's just what I'm going by if I do stock up.
Married 2005, DS: 2006, DD: 2008 EDD: 4/16/14- IT'S A GIRL! Scarlett Jean
I didn't stock up, my DH's friends threw him a diaper party, so we had a couple boxes in the house. We also stole the package in our room at the hospital, which is there to steal, so I guess we took what was ours, anyway. We tried the different brands we had been given and then settled on Target because they worked great and were cheap.
We're buying diapers when there are really good sales. I haven't spent over $5 a pack for any of the huggies, pampers or luvs I've bought so far. Our CVS has really good deals on diapers fairly often so I always go grab 2-3 packs each time I can. Neither of my other 2 were sensitive to any of them, and they all seemed to work about the same so I figured I might as well get them while I can get them as inexpensive as possible. If I end up with extras I'll save them for baby shower gifts.
I've bought one package each of newborn, size 1, and size 2. I figured that should get us started, and hopefully they'll be okay for baby. Beyond that, I've bought gift cards each week, and will keep them for diapers once we know what size and brand works for LO.

i've already started buying some diapers and wipes but only when I find a really good sale and have coupons. Had $3.00 off a pack of Huggies coupon (actually had a few of them) and waited until Huggies were on sale for $8.99 AND I had CVS bucks. I'm a deal hunter
I loved the diapers we used for DS, but I'm not going to stock up in case they don't work well on DD. Plus, I use Amazon Mom's/Prime for diapers/wipes/Diaper Genie refills, etc. so I just get a shipment per month. I'll schedule a delivery a month or so prior to my due date. Instead of buying the actual diapers, perhaps put X amount of dollars on a gift card to the store you plan to buy diapers from each month so that the funds are allocated to that?
Nope I'd wait. My dd2 had a diaper allergy to every diaper and had to use cloth!! It was so bad she was raw! Do we will be doing cloth again but I wouldn't bother.
1st loss 8/31 2nd pregnancy -TWINS lost DD1 twin at 8 weeks 6 days DD1 born 6 weeks early
3rd pregnancy- TWINS AGAIN lost both babies at 9 week appt
4th pregnancy- singleton- born at 38 weeks 1 day with the help of weekly 17P injections 5th pregnancy- CP in June 6th pregnancy It's a BOY
We started buying some, but with twins I feel like we need as many as we can get. I had a couple coupons for groupon for Honest diapers and used those and we have some pampers.
Since you don't know what brand, size, etc, you can always get a Target (or wherever you shop) gift cards when you go to the store. My friend got a $10 or $20 gift card when she went shopping so when baby came, she had all this extra money to spend!
I haven't tried it yet, but I may start doing that.
We never stocked up for DD, only got one small pack of newborn size and one small pack of size 1. We had to go through a couple brands to find one that worked well for her without leaking. Then had to switch brands again with the next size up.
Before dd was born, I couponer and bought a variety of sizes and brands and didn't have to buy any diapers until she was 18 months old. I now know what brands worked for us and am stocking up for baby #2. I also get great deals at CVS.
I've picked up 2 packs of newborn swaddlers so far. We said we were going to pick up a few different kinds of brands and sizes every other payday. If the brand or size doesn't work for us, we will just give to someone else in need.
We're planning on making diaper purchases in January. We want to go with cloth diapers, but will use disposable newborn size diapers. Most of the cloth diapers don't work until the baby is 8 pounds. Since we're not sure how big the baby will be when born, I'd prefer to not go crazy with newborn size diapers.
We're cloth diapering, so we've bought about 30 (all on super sale) in different brands, since different ones work better for different babies. We can buy more of the ones that work later and resell the ones that don't (or keep them for #2).
I just bought 36 in assorted brands and 2 wet bags on cyber monday at a steal. I'm good for a little while.
Since this will be my 4th baby, I actually have a small stash (one package) of each size in the basement... someone told me recently diapers have expiration dates, but I haven't seen a 'best if used by' date on a box (and I still have two in diapers... my 2 year old and my 1 year old are both on size 5).
That being said, I stock up on NB or size 1 before leaving the hospital... mothers are allowed to take anything but the cloth items (so diapers, creams/lotions, the nasal aspirator, the hairbrush, etc. are ok, but not the shirts, burp cloths, or blankets).
Actually, with my last baby, the hospital gave me a pack of NBs and about 3 packs of size 1s when I asked if I could have *a few* extra. They also gave me 3 packs of those humongous hospital-size pads, which I only used the rest of the already opened pack before being able to downgrade to a normal store-bought ones... so I have a stash of those and will not be needing extras of those this time around. Ha!
ETA: To answer your question, stock up as you have the money in your budget to do so. But maybe see if there is an expiration date (and prove my friend may not be so crazy after all...). Unless you're going to cloth diaper, diapers will be an expense for a long time coming and it can't hurt to have some extras laying around.
I'll just be buying one pack of newborn disposables for the first few days, then we're using small fuzzibunz, and bum genius 4.0's when he's bigger. I'm lucky my sister is gifting me the fuzzibunz. I bought 9 bum genius dipes during the seconds sale - I'll be keeping my eyes peeled for sales in the next 5 months.
cottonbabies.com is having another seconds sale right now
