DH, DS and I made a short trip to a small grocery store over Thanksgiving weekend. We put DS in the grocery cart and he finds a penny in the cart at the entrance of the store. As we are walking DH was pushing the cart and DS told a couple of people "I have monies!"
DS gives an old man shopper at the store the penny and says "here" and drops the penny on the floor. The old man gives the penny back to DS.
I got the penny from DS and told him I would hang on to it.
Super bittersweet, but dd is starting to follow a point, following a multi step instruction when I'm pointing, and pointing a lot to show interest/tell me about things she observes vs just pointing it when she needs something incredibly motivating/sees something she loves like a duck at the park.
I got DD1 a new pair of winter boots last week (blue, of course), and she wore them to school yesterday and today I told her that I want to work on wearing the (much loved) rain boots only when it rains, and she said okay. I also asked her if we could think about getting a second pair of winter boots in a different color, and she said she would like purple. Not the kind of thing I can brag about on Facebook, but I'm pretty excited about it. We're definitely making progress in the flexibility department.
I started potty training DS last week, and he is doing so well. He is doing both "1" and "2" on the potty at home has gone at school, and went in the bathroom at his OT's office!
DD1 asked to paint my toenails during one of our weekly nail-painting sessions. I let her choose the color (sparkly black, lol) and she did a pretty good job, actually!
I met with the school psychologist today about a general update, input from her on IEP progress, and working more self-advocacy in the social skills work she does with DD1. She pretty much gushed about DD1 and how well she's doing, and said that she doesn't really stick out at all in her class in terms of her abilities/disability. It's always nice to hear that from a professional!
We had our IEP meeting yesterday, so I'll include this with the Wednesday brags. While DS continues to be well below average in all kinds of things, mostly OT-related, including a new one- requiring DAPE or assistive gym, most of his speech communication and all of his academics are at or above average. In one area, reading comprehension, he scored at a third grade level! His teachers assured me he is a pleasure to have in class, has many friends whom he seeks out at recess, and that he does not disrupt the class or other kids. In fact, she said he has shown great advocacy skills by telling a seatmate of his, who is apparently quite annoying, to knock it off.
After a really trying start to the school year, it seems both boys are doing pretty well. We consistently have homework to under an hour (sometimes significantly less), they are both doing pretty well on spelling, and J's doing great in math. We have a lot of things they struggle with, but it's thrilling to see them improving so much!
I am a day late but I feel like I have not participated in awhile.
DS2 (4yr old) is starting to push himself up from a lying on his back to a long sit position and mainly with one hand. He has also started randomly pushing himself from his stomach into a push up position too. :-) We have also figured out that while he doesn't care much about learning the sounds of letters (he knows them all) and learning to read the way his older brother did, he is all about learning site words via index cards. This is at daycare so his DCP has been introducing 2 or so new site words a week and also introducing easy sentences to him that he is able to read (of the words he knows of course). Now, if only he would stop throwing major fits when he doesn't get his way immediately. :-)
