~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~

Welcome! This is a check-in for moms who are/were on a dairy free and/or soy free diet due to their LO's intolerance. The check-ins will be posted every Monday morning on the Breastfeeding board and XP'd to the Food Allergy board. If you'd like to join the group, just post an intro here and dive in! To check out the archive of our previous check-ins, please see the MSPI Moms Blog (www.mspimoms.blogspot.com).

1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing?

2. An unanswered question from last week: what is a logical progression for re-introducing soy? Baked goods then soy yogurt then soy milk or something else first? To baby first or mom? (If you have experience with this, please share! If you're not at this point yet, do you have a plan?)

3. A question that seems to come up often: how long does it take for symptoms to show up in your LO after you've eaten dairy or soy?

4. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share?

We'll get back to recipes next week. ;)

Re: ~*~*MSPI Moms Weekly Check-In*~*~ 12/2

  • Hello! We're two weeks dairy free over here.

Question: We are still seeing a little bit of blood in DS's diaper at least once/day. I don't know what to think about that. Any thoughts? Do I need to think about eliminating soy as well, or could this still be dairy in our systems? FWIW, I ate quite a bit of dairy before this whole adventure started.

I don't have anything to add to the discussion for Q's 2&3, but I did want to say that I had a great thanksgiving, and even with being diary free, I was able to eat everything I wanted. I even made a dairy-free green bean casserole!

Also, I think I've been doing pretty well with going out to eat. It always makes me a little nervous bc I can't actually see the food being prepared, but I have been pleasantly surprised with how accommodating many restaurants are.

    1. Ds and I are doing good.  Put call in to Pedi's office to start ds on meds for reflux since it is starting to cause him pain/discomfort.

    2. IDK about re-intro soy but I have noticed that since ds is not on soy formula he can tolerate hidden/trace amounts of soy so I just avoid obvious soy.

    3. I can't really answer this one since I am pumping and bottle feeding and sometimes the milk from multiple pumpings is mixed.

    4. No questions yet this week.

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? Good and good. We went up to my parent's place for Thanksgiving and had dinner by the campfire. My mom roasted a chicken and cooked up some green beans and potatoes. I brought a mushroom gravy (basically just sauteed mushrooms, onions, garlic and added a little chicken stock and herbs, blended it all up - delish!) and an apple crisp. DS loved "hiking". It was lovely!

    2. An unanswered question from last week: what is a logical progression for re-introducing soy? Baked goods then soy yogurt then soy milk or something else first? To baby first or mom? (If you have experience with this, please share! If you're not at this point yet, do you have a plan?) I'm not sure what the best progression would be, but I would think cooked soy or maybe starting with soy lecithin/oil would be a good bet. We have inadvertently intro'd soy both to DS and me recently, and both times he had a mucousy poop the next day.

    3. A question that seems to come up often: how long does it take for symptoms to show up in your LO after you've eaten dairy or soy? He usually reacts the next day (mucousy, smelly poop, sometimes gas).

    4. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? Not today. :)

I'm glad you had a good Thanksgiving! I have also been pleasantly surprised with the response by waiters and cooks to my requests. Re: your first question, since you are only 2 weeks dairy free, and it sounds like you probably had a lot of milk protein in your system to start with, it could definitely be the dairy your LO is still reacting to. I would give it at least 1 more week, if not 2, before cutting soy. If it's really bothering you, you could cut soy now also, wait a few more weeks until his symptoms clear up, then try reintroducing soy to your diet and see if he reacts.
  • @Earlybird725 I'm glad you had a yummy Thanksgiving dinner! That is frustrating about your inlaws... I think it's hard for some people to grasp the whole concept of dairy-free, and how annoying it is to have something you can't have waved in front of your face! When that happens around my DS (he is also old enough to want what everyone else has), I tell him, "That's just for so-and-so, not Mama or Weston." He seems to get it. It helps if he has something else yummy instead. :)

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? We're just doing ok this week. After 6 weeks of being of dairy free with no change in her stools, I spoke with her ped again about my concerns. He recommended we do some stool cultures to check for microscopic blood. Of course all of the samples had blood in them. So since last Wednesday, I have been off dairy, beef, soy, chocolate, peanuts, strawberries, citrus, wheat, eggs, fish, shellfish and tree nuts. It wasn't a happy Thanksgiving. Since I've been off  everything, DD has only had one or two "normal" looking diapers. Which is great since she hasn't had any since she was 2 weeks old. I was just hoping since I cut out so many foods that we would see some better results. Maybe I'm just cranky because I'm starving! I'm not sure what the plan is now or what our next step is. I plan on calling her ped on Friday to see how we should proceed.

    2. An unanswered question from last week: what is a logical progression for re-introducing soy? Baked goods then soy yogurt then soy milk or something else first? To baby first or mom? (If you have experience with this, please share! If you're not at this point yet, do you have a plan?) I wouldn't even know where to begin..

    3. A question that seems to come up often: how long does it take for symptoms to show up in your LO after you've eaten dairy or soy? Since I can't remember the last time she didn't have symptoms, I have no idea what the timeframe is for DD.

    4. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? Not this week!

  • 1. We are in the same boat as @samantharlee - completely unable to figure out what is going on and frustrated beyond belief! Dairy free for 6 weeks, peanut free/ beef free for 5 weeks, gluten & soy free for 4 weeks. We had a good change right after I stopped peanuts but then a few days later the horrible green stool with mucous resumed. It's so frustrating because we'll get a good BM, but then suddenly it's right back to the horrifying ones! At this point I'm eating rice/potatoes/chicken/turkey/a range of veggies/limited fruit/and a few snack items from Enjoy Life. I feel like I'm constantly hungry and it's such a struggle to even care about eating at this point since it's the same stuff over and over again. I keep trying to figure out what else it could be (vitamins, gripe water, gas drops, citric acid, etc, etc, etc). Thankfully our pedi is totally supportive of BF and wants us to continue, as long as I'm okay with continuing. In general he doesn't seem overly concerned, so I'm trying to remain patient and calm. LOs other symptoms (rash, acne, colic, gas, blood in stool, slow weight gain) improved so much right before Thanksgiving but have been struggling a lot again since then. Which everything I ate I was assured was dairy free; however, I'm not sure it was soy/nut/gluten free :/ I can't even imagine eating out like other pp's!

    2. I long for the day this is even a possibility!

    3. Not a clue!

    4. Has anyone experienced green stool only during a certain part of the day? I've noticed that many days we'll have pretty good stool, which goes to okay, and then bad by the end of the day. REGARDLESS of what I eat. This had me thinking it could be my vitamin or LOs vitamin - but without both it still seems to be going on!

Thanks for having this thread each week! I've been lurking over the last 6 weeks and figured today was as good as any day to begin chiming in... Although I think I was living in denial over the last 6 weeks hoping LO didn't have food sensitivities.

  • @AlexE2013 we're basically eating the same things! All I've eaten in the past week is chicken/potatoes/green beans/gluten free oatmeal/Enjoy Life breakfast bars. I feel like I'm hungry all the time and I'm worried about my supply since I'm not getting near enough calories in the day! Every time I change her diaper, I'm just hoping I won't find dark green, mucosy poop. One day it might actually happen...

Side note: I'm shocked by the amount of people who tell me to switch to formula to make it easier on me. That's not helpful in the least.
  • @samantharlee they obviously haven't checked out the price of these special formulas... No one has said that to me but that would really irritate me!

I often have this thought go through my own head but I "counter" it with the worry that if I was to do so and he stopped tolerating the Neocate that he's on now, what would I feed him?

Ok, I did think of a question:  So many here keep talking about green poop as a bad thing....the last time I mentioned to ds's Pedi that ds has dark green (think the dark shade of camo green) the Pedi said that the color was meaningless.  Is the green poop thing only relevant to babies that are too young for solids? I know some color variance is from the foods.

  • 1. How are you doing? How is your LO doing? We are ok except DS is teething pretty bad with all four canines at once.

    2. An unanswered question from last week: what is a logical progression for re-introducing soy? Baked goods then soy yogurt then soy milk or something else first? To baby first or mom? (If you have experience with this, please share! If you'renot at this point yet, do you have a plan?) I'm
the one who asked this. I want to do it slow and in a way that he will have the least pain if he has a reaction. We tried baked in soy protein and tofu. So far so good. Not sure what we are trying next.

    3. A question that seems to come up often: how long does it take for symptoms to show up in your LO after you've eaten dairy or soy? I've seen irritability pretty quickly but can't remember how long it was for the blood in the stool.

    4. Any other burning questions you'd like answered or experiences to share? Not that I can think of right now.

  • Sorry to just jump in here, I posted a question and didn't get much response on the bf board, probably bc this is pretty specific.  DD had milk intolerance until 6 months old (pretty mild, now 18m and tolerates cows milk fine, but screamed for 1st 6 weeks of life!).  Now 35 weeks pregnant with #2, should I give up dairy now, when she is born or just see how to tolerates it in my diet?  Any experiences?
  • @AlexE2013 I don't recall seeing a correlation between time of day and green poop. Now I'm curious to hear from others! BTW, you and @samantharlee are amazing for sticking with such restricted diets! I hope you get it figured out soon.

@PipSqueak0313 I have also heard that pedi's say not to worry about color. I think color alone may not be a concern. But when combined with mucous, blood, gas, etc., it points to a problem. My son had the same dark green and kind of slimy (I thought it looked like spinach) poop while we were in the thick of things. Definitely not normal!

@lucrezia1480 I don't have personal experience but personally I would probably wait and see. If it's not a big deal to you to cut dairy a few weeks before she's due by all means go ahead, but if it's going to cause you stress and cut calories it's probably not a good idea right now! GL!

  • 1). We are doing ok. DS just got over his staph infection, so good, and the dermatologist said that we can. Start relaxing a little on the hydrocortisone cream now. However, DS is starting to have another flaire up. Additionally, I contacted my LC to help with my supply issues and we have a plan in place, so that's good. I had one slip... Forgot that couldn't have stuffing, and so now I'm back to the drawing board again. 2.dont know. Haven't gotten that far. 3). I think a few days for us. 4). My question, is how do you control the rash when your LO has a flare up ?
  • @rissa06 I never really topically treated my DS's skin when he got rashy, except diaper rash cream on his bum. I got some excema lotion for his face but it didn't really seem to do much. We have now started him on zyrtec 1x/day on the advice of the allergist, to help control his chronic hives (rash) and teach his immune system to not be so reactive. He is 20 mo old now, though, so I don't know if you're LO would be old enough for that.
  • @rocknrollfriend the allergist didn't want to start him on allergy meds so young, but they do have me giving him benadryl every 6 hours when he is really itchy.

For the eczema, for the last two weeks the had me do the prescription hydrocortisone cream, an antibiotic and then use straight vasoline, but he changed it to hydrocrotisone three times a week and then either the vasoline or the cerave lotion.  I just took changed his clothes for bed and it is spreading again.  I'm so worried about another staff infection.
  • @rissa06 I've used CJs butter and would try coconut oil as well on ds' face when he breaks out. It helps a ton! I've had CJs on hand since its a cloth diaper safe cream -- but can be used other ways too. ;)

@rocknrollfriend is the Zyrtec helping with the shiners?? I keep noticing them on ds and keep thing about you guys!! Allergies are such a pain.

I guess I should participate in the check in. :)

    1. We're doing pretty good. DS is going through lots of development - rolling over, saying da da, wiggling around tons / getting places! SO that means he's having the sleep regression. He's waking to eat and play when he was sleeping through the night. Plus, gettin him down for a nap is near impossible. And suddenly the carseat is a torture device! Horrible mom here, putting her baby in a carseat. Lol

    2. Reintroducing. I think I'd start by me eating some food with "trace amounts" (these currently affect lo) and do that until I don't notice any affects. Than add in items where it's very low on the list. And gradually add things back. Once something hasn't affect him through me, I may be brave enough to allow ds to eat that item directly as well. (Who knows! We haven't even started solids!! :))

    3. I'd say anywhere between 6 to 24 hours. Probably sooner the more potent the dose. I've been pretty good lately. And proud of myself for making it through thanksgiving! My mom and DH were great to help make sure I had food to eat.

    4. I can't think of anything.

  • I have another question: does your child also react to goat and sheep's milk products?
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • Just wanted to update in case anyone is in this situation in the future, our lactation consultant did recommend going off dairy starting at 37 weeks then slowly adding back at some point when things calm down.  Goodbye dairy my love!
  • JarynA said:

I waited to give DS goats milk until he was almost 18 mo, and I think he'd outgrown his cow milk intolerance by then, so I'm not sure how he would've reacted earlier. I haven't given him any sheep's milk. I avoided all animal milks until I gave him some.
  • @mrscjmb9410 is your LO still intolerant of milk too? or just soy. W is still intolerant of soy, unfortunately we've inadvertently tested it a few times recently. Sorry your little guy had a rough time. :(
  • @rissa06 Poor baby, I hope his skin isn't getting worse or infected. :( Keep us posted.
@yellowlily2013 He does seem to get the shiners less! He'll have bags under his eyes when he's woken up too early but I haven't noticed the shiners so much. We've only been on the zyrtec less than a week, though, so I could be seeing things I want to see. I feel you on the sleep regression, hang in there! Hopefully it doesn't last long. Whenever DS has thrown fits about the car seat it usually means it needs an adjustment, maybe your LO is uncomfortable? GL!
  • I hope it's okay to post this question here -

What are you doing for LO in terms of vitamins? The LC I'm working with told me to make sure to give LO vitamins since we are struggling so much, but to also make sure they are Dairy and Gluten Free. We had been giving LO Rugby Polyvitamin liquid which says it compares to vitamins in POLY-VI-SOL. I cannot find any guarantee about it being dairy/gluten free on the box or the internet.

Any suggestions on a different, over the counter, vitamin I could use? Also, that's liquid or powder form?

I used the Carlson D drops for Vit D, and I think they have other vitamins too, you can check their website. I've also purchased prenatal vitamins from local stores that do say they are vega, gluten-free, soy-free, etc. so I think if you look around you should be able to find something. Oh, I have DS BioGaia probiotics too, but I don't know if they have vitamins.
  • rocknrollfriend  Thanks so much for checking in.  Evan is doing ok.  He had another pretty bad flare up, but it is starting to calm down now.  It is being recommended that I stop BF'ing completely, because they have no idea what is causing his issues.  He isn't gaining weight and they do not want to continue the steroids, because not good for him and I agree with not wanting him on the steroids.  Also, he is becoming resistant to everything that they try and start.  It has been a long road and I have some thinking of what I want to do moving forward.  I don't want him on another round of antibotics for more staph infections, if I can help.
  • @rissa06 Poor baby and mama. :( I hope you all can get everything figured out soon. I've forgotten if I already asked you if you've checked out the Food Allergy board? Those ladies are really knowledgeable about issues beyond MSPI. GL and keep us posted! Feel free to PM me anytime.
