Good tips for two kids sharing a room at very different stages? (One newborn one @ 3)

When LO was born we shared our room for three weeks then moved from the bassinet in our room to the crib in the nursery. It was great everyone slept better and we all were happy campers. Fast forward a few years LO will be 3 when the new baby comes in a few weeks. We are planning on selling our house next year but in the meantime we have the crib in LO's room and a bassinet in our room. Our plan was to nap the new baby in the shared bedroom and let the baby sleep in our room in the bassinet until sleeping through the night. Anyone have experience with this type of shared room setup. We are aren't thrilled but we have to make it work for a year so we are making the best of it. Any tips from experience are appreciated!!!!!

  • Will your older child have access to the room while LO is napping?  The way you're going to be doing it (LO sleeps in your room at night) sounds like it would work.  I would just be cautious of older sibling being in the room with LO during nap time.

  • We moved our girls in together when the youngest was 1 and the oldest was almost 4, so similar spacing.  That's when the littlest was finally sleeping well enough.  It worked well.  I can't sleep with the baby in my room, so that wouldn't have worked fully for us (I like Leftie22's idea...)  I've been known to utilize a closet and a bathroom to put a pack and play in when travelling, if you have a large one that could also work for a while.  Now that the girls share a room, they actually both love it and the older one actually sleeps better.  Fewer nightmares and night wakings.
  • Thanks girls! I hope he will be a good sleeper. We have a girl with a boy on the way so this sleeping arrangement will be temporary for sure but I think we can make it work. I didn't sleep well with LO in our room either every noise made me wake up. Our first child no longer naps but we do have a swing gate in the doorway to the room we can latch while he is sleeping for naps. Hopefully everyone will sleep well sooner than later :-)
  • I'm having the same situation except my son is 10 and baby boy due any week now. Plan to nap in shared room while 10yr old is at school and sleep in bassinet in our room at night. No since in 10yr old getting woken up during the night when he has to get up and go to school.
  • DD#2 is due in January. We have a tiny house and don't intend to move out anytime soon. Our girls will share a room once DD#2 has a predictable sleep schedule (eg only getting up once a night for a feeding). We too don't sleep well with babes in our room. We have two bassinets: one for the living room and one for our den. Fortunately, bassinets are portable, so if neither of these arrangements works, we can put her in anothe comfortable place. Remember that little babies are usually pretty heavy sleepers, so done noise won't disturb your LO too much ;-)

  • Little ones are usually heavy sleepers. However, I would be totally sure it's not disrupting their sleep. It is more important for your child to sleep well, than you.
