Explaining divorce to young children

A little backstory: I'm a divorced mom who splits custody with DD's dad. He took DD to a play a few weeks ago and bumped into my neighbors girls whom DD plays with fairly often. Well yesterday DD was playing with said neighbor girls and the kindergarten aged girl wanted to know why I wasn't with DD at the play. I was at a loss for words thinking of an age appropriate way to explain divorce to a 5 year old. I guess I could have just told her I had some things to do but instead I told her that DD's dad and I don't live together and she didn't ask any further questions. What would you have said?
