How often should I pump?

I'm a paramedic and work two-twenty four hour shift/week. Hate being away so long :(. LO is 8 weeks.

I've been trying to pump every 3-4hrs, but that's not always possible. At home he eats every 2-3hrs during the day. I haven't been able to produce quite as much as he eats while I'm gone.

Should I pump more often?
I get 3-4oz when I pump every 3-4hrs. LO is ebf and I really want to avoid supplementing.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: How often should I pump?

  • I work 12 hrs and I pump every 4 hrs. I pump both breasts at the same time. He eats 4 oz every 3 hrs. So if I get at least 2-3 oz from each breast I get enough for the next day. So far it's worked well.

If you pump on your days off, you should have enough in the fridge for the 24 hrs your gone, then what you pump at work is just to keep your supply up and to add to what you need for your next shift. If you do the 24 on 48 off, you should be able to get enough in the 48 hrs you are off.

    Good luck.
