s/o tipping

Who do you give a tip or Christmas present to that is a worker? I never grew up giving anything to the mailman or the trashman but apparently I am not the norm in my circle of friends.

Re: s/o tipping

  • I would tip the sitter, the guy who mows the lawn and maybe my stylist except I no longer have a regular one. I will give the mail lady and garbage collectors homemade treats (usually cookies and caramels). Also, H's boss will get goodies. I will give the checks in a goody tin for the lawn guy and sitter. Well, the lawn guy gets cash because I doubt he has a bank account.

  • Oh and I go to a playgroup at the park. The leader will get a tin too.

I've never tipped a mail carrier before, either. It never seems to be the same person delivering the mail. Plus, I wouldn't think they'd want home baked good for safety reasons.

How do you even tip the garbage collectors? I'm at work when they come.
  • We tip the garbage man.   We are one of the first stops they make so I am usually home and if I am not awake the truck wakes me up.   I have stuck it on the top of the can with tape before.   I also used to tip my doorman in my building but I don't have that anymore since I live in the middle of nowhere.   I will probably give the mailman a small gift card or lotto tickets.   We don't have the paper delivered.

  • I'm dying laughing at the image of a buff Ryan Gosling sprinting from house to house as Bpaws' mailman. Yes, I just inserted Ryan Gosling in there.

Our mail person changes all the time and our garbage person probably hates us, too. I would probably do candies in a cute package if we did anything.
  • Do those of you who tip the garbage man live where there isn't municipal service? I think that's the difference.
I'll tip (bonus) the cleaning lady and babysitter(s). Small gifts for preschool teachers and the Y nursery staff.
  • I was a little worried about gifts for our daycare teachers because there are a lot, but as it turns out he's changing rooms and will have new teachers by then. Only 3. Whew! I'm sure I can figure something out for them.
I'll probably get a gift card or something for our occasional babysitter. She'll be watching Nolan a full day on the 23rd since daycare is closed the whole week of Christmas. Perfect timing!
  • i always do the cleaning ladies and daycare people. i do all the old teachers that theyve had that year plus the room they are currently in. (i never want to forget about the classes they were in that year.) last year there were wayyyy too many between both kids though.

now we bought a house so mailman and garbage guy but i dont know how we will get a tip to the garbage guy. we also will send something to our realtors and to the our mortgage girl and loan originator for being so helpful. i am sure i am forgetting others. i need to put a list together.  ugh.
That's really nice, but didn't they make a lot of $$ in the deal?
  • I may sound like a stingy grinch, but I don't tip anyone around Christmas time. Unless it's someone in a profession that normally operates on tips, why would you? I don't expect patients at work to tip me. However, I love baking and always bake an array of cookies/candies to give to people that we normally wouldn't exchange gifts with, like coworkers and neighbors.
  • I've never heard of tipping the mailman or garbage people before! I never even see them though either to know anything about them. Is this a regional thing? I don't know why I would tip them for Christmas. I can see a housekeeper or babysitter but not someone I never see or communicate with. Hmm.
  • Do your garbage people not have a mechanized truck that dumps the can in with a big metal arm? Sticking something on top of the can wouldn't work, I don't think. I'm in the no tipping camp too. We did give the nanny something when I was working part time with just DS. And I grew up giving our teachers presents.

  • Our cleaning lady is getting a fairly large amount gift card.  I haven't decided on the amount yet.
We have a house sitter when we are traveling/ visiting out of the country.  When we get back (still unsure of our return) I will pick up a Gift Card for him.
