Infertility

Intro (loss mentioned)

Hi ladies,

After a very long break from the bump...I think I am finally ready to come back and I guess this board is where I belong now (I can't handle the TTC after a loss board).  My story...as short as I can make it. I'm a 35 year old American, married to a Brit, recently moved from Thailand to our new home in Sofia, Bulgaria (we are international school teachers).  I have endometriosis, a fibroid outside my uterus and PCOS.  After 6 months of being told it would be very hard for me to get pregnant, we were stunned when we conceived naturally in September 2012.  After lots of pain and issues, we found out we had a missed miscarriage at 10 weeks.  We've been trying for the past year to get pregnant again, but with no luck.

Before we left Thailand, I was put on clomid and have continued taking it (unmonitored for all but the first cycle) for the past 5 cycles.   We just found a fertility clinic in Sofia and had more fertility tests run, including my husband this time.  My tests came back ok, but my husband's sperm had a motility of 14 and morphology of 3, both below normal.  As all the results are in Bulgarian, I still don't understand it all.  The doctor speaks some English, but not enough to really explain everything to me.  I feel like I've been completely lost throughout this process, as there has always been a language issue.

Anyway, the doctor recommended we continue trying naturally this month (since I'm on clomid and it looks like I'm going to ovulate this month, but that if it doesn't work (which she wasn't optimistic about), I'll have an HSG test and then try IUI in January if the test results are ok.  I was kind of hoping that she would just suggest IVF since the success rates seem to be higher, but I guess we'll give this a try at least once.  We are paying for this out of pocket, so we have to watch our expenses.

I've been reading this message board for the past several weeks, trying to learn as much as I can.  I fear I won't be able to contribute very much knowledge, as I feel uninformed most of the time!  I will try to offer as much support as I can instead.  Thanks for listening!

Re: Intro (loss mentioned)

  • Welcome and sorry you found yourself here. You do have quite a story, we too face pcos & male factor low everything. Another thing to try and break down on his test is count per million that will really tell if you should try iui or ivf since your oop. IUIs have a tendency to be lesser measure before extreme but with low success rates. Any of the girls here would be able to help with any questions you may have.

  • I am so sorry for your loss. In your own language muddling through this is hard enough, I can't imagine doing it with a language barrier.
    Married April 2011image

    TTC since May 2011

April 2012 first loss - CP

November 2012 2nd loss - 7 weeks (though I ovulated late so it is likely a CP as well)
Hormone workup and u/s showed everything looked fine

    December 2012 3rd loss - CP
GP tested my hormones and incorrectly diagnosed me with premature ovarian failure
(hormone testing needs to be timed with you cycle)

January 2012 OB/GYN recurrent loss testing
I do not have premature ovarian failure.
    Dx:
MTHFR (take a B-complex daily) - single gene
Factor II (take a baby asprin daily) - single gene

    February 2013 Genetic counseling
    Dx:
MTHFR doesn't matter (take extra B, though)
Factor II is unlikely but possible (later miscarriages)
Balanced Chromosome Translocation bw 5&6 (likely causing everything)
I was given a 49% chance at success due to the chromosome issue

    August 2013 4th loss - CP

    October 2013 5th loss - CP
Prenatal workup found that I had low progesterone
Further testing after loss found that I had low antithrombin

    November 2013 RE workup
RE told me to stop the asprin (not my issue)
RE told me that my low progesterone was due to my body knowing the pregnancy was failing
    Dx:
    Sono-HSG - Arcuate uterus
DH is fine, so far (still waiting on karyotyping for him)

Still need to do my CD3 hormone workup

TL;DR:  5 losses => Balanced translocation, arcuate uterus, factor II, low antithrombin, and MTHFR

  • i second was rebmos said.. dealing with this can be confusing enough, let alone with a language on top. welcome and i wish you the best of luck!
