Murphy for a girl?

I met a girl named Murphy over the weekend, and I thought it was really unusual. Is this a "traditional" girls name that I don't know about? Not trying to be snarky it just really caught me off guard. Thoughts?

I automatically think Murphy brown.  Dislike it on a girl.  Ok for a boy.

My SIL just named her dog Murphy.

My neighbor has a female dog named Murphy. On people, however, no. It would be an adorable boy's name, but I do not like it on a girl.

Wow, that's bad as a first name for a boy. Really bad for a girl.

Now it's got me thinking... So Murphy Brown, which I used to watch but cant recall... So that was her real first name?

Oh my gosh, I totally forgot about Murphy Brown! The only other reason I could think of was that it might have been a family name? Or maybe her mother's maiden name?

I totally thought dog name too.... but I felt bad thinking it....

I love it. But I like unusual and I like Irish names. My name is Kayla (often used as a dog name) McCormic. This is exactly why I will not tell anyone the baby's name until it's born:)

It's a traditional last name.  I wouldn't use it as a fn for either a boy or a girl.  I'd use it for a dog, though.

My baby's last name is Murphy soo no.. and a friend just named her dog that. Definitely not a good first name for a child!

There is a little one in my SAHM group. I'm not a fan at all. She has two older brothers with surnames as FNs and I can never remember which one is supposed to be the girl.

"Murf" seems like a really unattractive NN for a little girl.

I'm not surprised to see it used, even though Murphy Brown is getting to be a dated reference. Thanks to the show, people have heard it on a girl/woman before.

eww, I'm thinking another LN as FN. I really dont mind LN as FN trend with certain names. But Murphy on a girl does not sound good IMO

I think all of us know at least one dog named Murphy. For this reason alone I wouldn't name my child this, let alone a girl.

no...   as a mn after family yes-  but as a fn for a woman?  just no...   It has such a "guy" vibe to me   Kind of like Cooper.
