I've always kind of thought of this in a UK vs US context; in the US, Gray is more commonly used as a color, so Grey looks more "name-y." Where in the UK, grey is more commonly used as a color, so Gray looks more "name-y" (actually, the very reason Oscar Wilde, an Englishman, chose the Gray spelling for his character, Dorian Gray. He thought Grey would remind people too much of the color).
