3rd Trimester

Does Stripping of Membranes work?

I went to my 38 week checkup yesterday and had not progressed from my 37 week check. My Dr stripped my membranes and since I have continued to cramp and have spotting which I know is normal. I was just wondering  how often this actually works. Anyone else have any experience with this? If so, did it jump start the labor process???

Re: Does Stripping of Membranes work?

  • I will be 39 weeks Sunday and my doctor stripped my membranes this past Tuesday (without me knowing). Nothing has happened yet, other than losing my plug. I know you are probably tired of hearing this, but I guess it just depends on your body and your baby if the procedure will work. I've read up on it and stripping of the membranes was actually successful on a lot of women. I guess it all just depends.

Yep.  It sometimes works. It sometimes doesn't.  It didn't for me.

  • When I was pregnant with my daughter I had a sweep at 38 weeks, lost my mucous plug the next day and water broke a day later.  DD was born that day.  I haven't had it done yet this time and I'm 39 weeks.

  • My doctor stripped mine at 38 weeks with DS and told me she would be expecting a call from me in the next couple of days, I went another two and a half weeks.  <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

  • It works if you are ready to go into labor. I had my membranes stripped at 40 weeks and I was in labor 12 hrs later.

  • I had it done twice with my daughter. Once at 38 weeks and then another time at my 40 week appointment (which was a couple days before my actual due date). I lost my mucous plug later that night and was cramping a bit. The next day I went into very early labor. Had her the following night.
  • I honestly don't think any of that works. When your body/baby is ready, it's ready.
  • Like anything, it can work if your body is ready and just needs a little 'help'. It worked for me with #1 at 40 w 6 d, but didn't work with #2 at 39 weeks. Most of the 'success' stories I've seen and heard of happen after 40 weeks.

  • Had my membranes swept August 2. DS arrived on his own the afternoon of 8/3. It worked for me, but there is no way for me to be able to tell you if it will work for you.

  • I had mine stripped last tuesday at my appt at 1cm and 50% effaced.  Still very much pregnant.  Next appt is Weds on my due date and I may have them give it another try as I really would like to avoid being induced.

  • It depends. I had mine stripped at my 40 week appt and I was induced due to low AF at 41 weeks. Didn't work for me. My midwife said that if the babe isn't ready to come, nothing is going to bring on labor (except meds, of course).
