Hip Ultrasound for Breech Baby

At my son's 2 week check up the pediatrician said that we had to schedule a hip ultrasound to make sure my son doesn't have hip dysplasia.  He said it is a standard procedure for breech babies and didn't mention that he was overly concerned about my son.  But of course I can't help but worry and over analyze his hips now.  I know there is nothing I can do at this point anyways.  But it is killing me that I have to wait until December because they do the ultrasound at 8 weeks.  Have any of you had experience with your LO having  a hip ultrasound or hip dysplasia?

  • It's SOP in many practices, so no worries! The procedure itself is painless for LO and you'll do great! As long as your pedi didn't notice any clicking on exam then I personally wouldn't worry a thing about it until the ultrasound confirms. That being said now that I've already been through it...I was a nervous wreck about it with DD too so it's normal you're worried about it.

  • DD1 was breech and had a hip ultrasound at 6 weeks, it's standard for her pedi.

  • My DD3 was breech and never had an ultrasound. I didn't even know that it was something many pedi did until I came on here.

Try and relax. If there is a problem at least they are testing for it. I know that's hard though. My DS failed his newborn hearing screen and we had to wait a month for additional testing (everything turned out fine) but that month was painful. I had all but convinced myself that he was partially deaf.
  • DD was breech and had a hip ultrasound at 8 weeks, followed by another at 12 weeks. Long story short, we were put through a lot of emotional turmoil and ended up spending close to $2,000 for no good reason. I'm not trying to scare you at all, because it turns out she was fine. But we were sent to numerous specialists for a very mild case of hip dysplasia that corrected itself. It was a mountain out of a mole hill situation. But we were so worried and freaked out, we did whatever the doctors told us to do. More than likely, everything will come out fine on your DS's ultrasound. But my advice to you if anything does come up is to just take the ultrasound films to another pediatrician and get a second opinion as to whether or not you need to see an ortho specialist or physical therapist. We saw both needlessly, and if we had just gotten the second opinion first, it would have saved us a lot of anguish and money. If that doctor recommends you see the specialists, the good news is that at this age, hip dysplasia is very easily treated by the baby wearing a simple harness or brace for just a short period of time. The babies really don't even seem to know they have them on. Just trust your instincts and you will be fine. I know the waiting for news is torturous but I'm sure everything will turn out just fine!

  • Both my boys were breech- and they never had a u/s of their hips.  My Pedi- who has neonatal experience- always checked their hips(listening) and also checked to see if the skin folds lined up when she pulled them straight out.  If she saw something to worry her we would of had a u/s- like we did at 6 months of their heads because they both had big noggins.
  • Dd was breech and had a hip u/s. it was standard at my ped for breech babies

  • DD was breech.  Our pediatrician does not routinely do hip ultrasounds.  She mentioned after DD was born that DD's hips were fine. Checking for hip dysplasia is part of every well baby visit, breech or not.
DS born 8/8/09 and DD born 6/12/12.
  • Thanks for the reassurance. They check hips routinely at the check ups and haven't given me any reason to worry but of course I still do!

  • Yup our 3rd child was breech and had bilateral hip dysplasia. It was very mild and corrected on it's own by about 6 months. We were followed up at 12 months, and the next one will be at about 20-24 months old.

Wasn't bad at all, the ultrasounds and xrays were quick. GL :)

  • DS had one at 1 month and again at 3 months. He was all clear - no issues.

  • I am glad I saw this because I was curious if hip ultrasounds were standard for breech babies. My LO is breech (head and feet up/butt down as of Monday). They haven't mentioned checking her for hip dysplasia yet but I wasn't sure if it was something that I should bring up. I had read something about hip dysplasia and breech babies which is why I wanted to ask here.

  • I've had two breech babies, two sections, and two rounds of xrays: both turned out beautifully and no problems at all. It's totally routine and not a matter of concern at all.  Good luck!

  • My DD was not breech, but was diagnosed with hip dysplasia at birth. Her pediatrician noticed the clicking in both of her hips. We had a u/s done when she was a few weeks old and it again proved that she had hip dysplasia. She saw a pediatric orthopedic doctor for her first 18 months. She was put in the Pavlik harness for one month (at one month old) and it did not work to correct anything on her hips. She then wore a rhino brace for the next 6 months 24/7, for the following 2 months she only needed it at night. It was hard for me as a first time mom, but her hips are perfect now as we just has a X-ray when she turned 5.

  • Yeah i think it is totally standard. Both my sister and I had c/s with our LOs and they both had the ultasound. I really is no big deal. Don't worry for nothing and so far ahead of time.
  • Both my girls were c/s bc they were breech and both had the ultrasounds. It is really quick, and my second even slept through it, very easy! No issues for us but just a standard precaution
