Intro (and question)

Hi all,

My wife and I have been planning/prepping to begin IUI during her next cycle. We were all fired up and ready, but then learned she needed the chicken pox vaccine which delayed us 2 months. We've been trying to figure out what day she ovulated for 2 cycles. OPKs didn't work for us so this month we're doing temperature charting and the clear blue easy fertility monitor which is supposed to be much more accurate. On top of not being able to pinpoint her ovulation day, her last cycle was 4 days longer than usual, making it hard to predict when we can do the IUI next month.

My question is regarding donor sperm. We've picked a donor and are ready to order, but we can't decide how much to order. I def want to ensure that we have enough to try as many times as we need to, and potentially even enough to have another child using the same donor. California Cryo offers "free" storage for 3 years if you order 10 vials, so I'm leaning towards that. They will also buy back what we don't use at 50%. Any advice on how much to order?

Thanks for listening this long! Look forward to getting to know you guys.

Re: Intro (and question)

  • I would buy as much as you can afford ! We bought 9 (paid for 8, received 1 free). That entitled us to one free shipping and 2 years free storage. Lucky for us that Fairfax has a cryobank where we live, so we were able to ship all 9 for free. We used 5 to have baby #1 (on his way) and we have 4 left to make baby #2 down the road.

Also, your RE should be able to monitor ovulation through ultrasounds and trigger shots if your wife doesn't respond to OPKs.

    Good luck!

  • Welcome!  Please join us on the TTC thread on Mondays.  That is where those of us in any stage of TTC let each other know what's going on with our journey.  It is also a great place to get support.  This whole board is a great place for support.

We bought 3 vials at first as our RE said that he wanted to do surgery after three failed IUIs to see if we missed something that might be wrong.  I'm scheduled for surgery for 11/19, so all three failed.  Once we get the go ahead to move forward after the surgery, we will be ordering a new donor.  We are planning to buy at least 6 vials this time.  Hopefully we can get two kiddos out of 6 vials.  We shall see.

    Good luck!

I would recommend just 1-2 units to see what the #s are like first. We used two separate donors who's quality was not up the banks "guarantee." We up selling the extra units back for a large loss. Finally the third donor worked. With that said, you run the risk of him "selling out," so I would ask how many are available for sale.
