TTC After a Loss

Intro and Some Questions About Asherman's Syndrome- **Long/Loss Mentioned**

I’ve been lurking for a few weeks before finally feeling comfortable enough to create a bump account.

I had a missed miscarriage in early Sept. I went in for my 12 week appointment only to discover that we lost our baby at 9 weeks. I opted for a D&C and had the surgery the following day. We later found out through the D&C pathology results that we lost our little girl to Turner Syndrome. It’s a loss I’m still coping with, but I’m trying to be positive and look towards the future.

I’m new the whole TTC world and just started charting this month. I’ve been reading over the TTCAL blog but I can’t seem to find anything in regards to Asherman’s Syndrome. I’m terrified that I may have some intrauterine adhesions/scarring. My first period post D&C on 10/8 was extremely spotting/scanty that would come and go over a 5 day span. I called my doctor’s office and spoke to the nurse to ask if this was indeed a period or more bleeding related to the D&C that I should be concerned about. She said because I was at 5 weeks post D&C and that it was spotty that it was most likely my period and that my lining hadn’t built back up enough for it to be a normal flow. I *think* I just had my second period that began on 10/31 but like the first it was very spotty. And possibly even lighter. This lasted for only 4 days. I spoke with the nurse again who said the nurse practitioner seems to think that it’s normal, and just my hormones trying to level out. She didn’t even get to ask my doctor, who performed my D&C, because she was out of the office. When I mentioned the possibility of Asherman’s Syndrome the nurse dismissed it and told me “that it’s very, very rare”.

I have PCOS and had been on BCP a few years before we conceived this baby. After 2 months off of the pill and still no AF, I went to the doctor’s office and did an ultrasound to look at my uterus for any cysts. That’s when they determined that I had just ovulated which resulted in the conception of this pregnancy. So since I’ve struggled with absent periods and long cycles for a long time, I’m not sure what a normal cycle length is like for me. Because this first cycle lasted only 23 days (which has never happened for me), should I chalk this up as wonky hormones or should I push my doctor into looking more into Asherman’s Syndrome? Dr. Google has me very worried and I can’t seem to find much information over it. I also feel like my doctor’s office isn’t taking my concerns very seriously; which has been an ongoing problem since the beginning of this past pregnancy. I’m a big worry wart, and like I mentioned before, I’m new to the whole TTC world so I’m not sure what is considered normal.

DH and I would like to TTC soon, so I’ve been doing just about anything to thicken my lining; from drinking red raspberry leaf tea and pomegranate juice to regular exercise, castor oil packs and maca root. But now with my cycles out of whack I just feel confused, stuck and really upset. After my two week D&C follow up, my doctor said we can try after 2 cycles. And the nurse never mentioned TTC when I spoke to her after this second period. Thus the reason for my confusion.

I apologize for my long rambling and greatly appreciate any advice, insight or anyone else’s experience with AS. You ladies seem to be a wonderful, close, tight-knit community that I hope to be able to join and participate often. I look forward to getting to know all of you! And thank you to anyone who was able to read through my long post!

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Dr Google can be a blessing or a curse. That being said, if you are not comfortable with your docotor than I think you should definitley switch! Trustingy our doctor is very important.

Cycles can be wonky for a long time after a loss and it sounds like yours were already abnormal. Charting may really help you figure out your body, but don't put too much pressure on yourself to have everything figured out. Sometimes our bodies just don't make much sense.

    ((HUGS)) to you

  • Cycles can be very wacky after a loss & especially after a d&c.

With my first d&c my first 2 or 3 periods were very light and (shorter)around 4days long.

I agree that this has something to do with the lining being "scraped" thin during the d&c...so the lining hasn't fully built up to the usual normal thus resulting in lighter flow.

Cycles can also drastically change after a loss as well. They can be shorter or longer. Anything can become a new normal.

I wouldn't be too concerned at this point about asherman's. Has anything been done to address your pcos? That would be where I'd start. Also Temping can be beneficial to attempt to see what's going on with your body.

  • Thanks, ladies for the replies! My ob/gyn put me on metformin to treat my insulin resistance and before that I was on BCP to help regulate my cycles. I'm not really sure what my next steps are or when I should ask for a RE referral. Since we're just now getting back into TTC, I've just started temping and I plan to use OPKs. Should I be seeing an RE now because of my PCOS diagnosis?
  • Welcome to the board and sorry for your loss. I don't have any information in regards to asherman's but I just wanted to offer you support! I agree with PP that you should feel 100% comfortable with your OB and I recommend switching if you do not feel this way.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss and that you find yourself here.

I'm dealing with a possible asherman's diagnosis right now. I've had 2 D&Cs and my AFs have not been the same since. My doctor is reluctant to call it "Ashermans" at this point because the scarring that was visualized seems to be pretty small (fingers crossed)

What clued me in that something was wrong was my lack of red flow. I've been charting and so I know that I'm ovulating regularly and when my AF is due I'm lucky if I get 2 days of brown/black spotting. I do not even need to wear a bad because I usually take care of whatever little bit there is after wiping.

If you are concerned that you have scarring please call you doctor and insist to be seen. It's much better to rule out scarring and take a few months to let your lining build back up then wait and potentially make the problem worse.

My doctor told me to stay off google. In his opinion "scarring" is highly treatable and as a result google does nothing but scare you.

FWIW, I'm currently waiting on my AF (due tomorrow or the next day). During the U/S i had done to check for scarring my doctor broke through a scar blocking my cervix. He feels that this might be enough to restore my AF. Time will tell I guess.

Best of luck to you, if you have any questions feel free to PM me.

  • I'm sorry for your loss. Be careful with google - it can make you crazy. You could always go somewhere else for a second opinion. I'm sorry but I don't know much about AS. After one d&c, I don't think the chances are high of AS. Best of luck!

  • I'm sorry for your loss.  I don't have experience with Ashermans but I'm sure it's scary to think something is wrong and not have your doctor take you seriously.  I definitely agree with PP that you should be comfortable with your OB so I wouldn't hesitate to get another opinion or demand to be seen by your current OB.  Dr. Google is something you'll want to be careful with but it is definitely helpful in educating you.  ((hugs)) Welcome to the board.

  • I am very sorry for your loss!  I agree with PPs that if you are not comfortable with your doc you should switch to another OB or even an RE at this point.  It's better to rule something out than to have the constant worry that there's something wrong.  ((HUGS)) and I hope that you can get some answers soon!
