We never had one for Avery, since we didn't have stairs when she was learning to use them. If you like yours, please let me know what kind you have. Ideally I'd like something that Avery can open and close easily so that she isn't tempted to climb over it.
Ours is by safety first and we like it. you have to press down and lift so I dont' know if she'd be able to open it on her own. I don't think she's be able to life her self over though as it is comes up to my hips.

Ours is a retractable one, its from BRU. It's awesome. We had one that swung open before and it was so awkward to get around. Hazel could def not open this gate though, it's a 2 hand operation. We don't use it now, but I bet it comes up to her shoulders and its made of a strong plastic mesh-like material, so no chance she could climb over it either.
We have this Munchkin gate. It's also available in an extra tall version.
We really like it. At first, we had a pressure mounted gate that automatically closed. It was mounted against two banisters and DH said it was putting too much pressure on the banisters. Our current gate is hardware mounted.
You have to push and lift in order to open it. DS can't open it on his own. I prefer it that way as he is clumsy and trips up and down the stairs still, so he's not allowed to go on the stairs solo.
