Baby Names

name dilemma! please help!!!

We think we have our boy names "set in stone"

Landon Thomas
Carter John

we still throw around Gavin here and there but for the most part we are set on either of the first two. ( however, i secretly plan on fighting DH tooth and nail until birth for Carson :)

We couldn't agree on any girl names until yesterday. We both love Olivia.. but we both agree that it is way to trendy right now and don't want to pick a name thats too popular.

Peyton Claire (claire is a family name)

i always knew it would be hard to decide on names but never knew it would be THIS hard!!!!

Re: name dilemma! please help!!!

  • I much prefer Olivia to Peyton.

I like both of your boys names equally.

  • I really like Olivia! And  for what it's worth, have only even met one in real life. Of the boys names, I really like Landon. Both Cater and Gavin are quite popular in my area.

    I prefer Carter to Landon.

FWIW I know several Peytons/Paytons under age 2 and zero Olivias. Olivia is popular but I would actually consider Peyton extremely trendy as well, in that it has only within the last few years started to be used as a girl's name and has shot up in popularity. Not trying to discourage you from Peyton, but it may be more popular than you think. Would you be disappointed if your daughter had another Peyton in her daycare/preschool/kindergarten class, but no Olivias? If you'd be fine with it, then sure, go with Peyton. If you think you'd be disappointed, maybe reconsider Olivia.

  • Love your boy names. I like Peyton on boy or girl, I'm  a total avoid top 10 names so though Olivia is pretty it's too popular for me too.

  • Where I live Peyton is more common/popular than Olivia. Olivia, Peyton and Claire are all relatively popular right now, [Again, where I am. Its very possible that the popularity here is different than the popularity there.] I think if you're going to go with names that are generally popular, you might as well go with the one you like. Olivia is a fantastic name, and you can derive many nicknames from it [Olly, Olive, Livi, Lia, Liv, etc.] so your daughter would be able to take the name and make it unique for her even if someone else in the class has the same name.
A friend of mine named her daughter Peyton and she just started preschool - there are 7 other Peyton's in the class. She is currently "Peyton W." to all of her classmates and teachers. Again, the name might not be as popular in your area so it might not be an issue for you.
Would Claire be an option as a first name? It isn't nearly as popular as Peyton or Olivia.
Either way, I think if you are going to go for a popular name, you might as well go with the one you really like because you might find your compromise isn't really a compromise at all.
All of the names you've chosen are very nice though. I hope you can decide soon. :]
  • Absolutely love Carter and Carson! I'm not a fan of Peyton at all, much prefer Claire or Olivia.

Landon Thomas. Hands down. I used to hate the name Landon, but now I love it.
  • I like Carter and Olivia best even though they are both popular.
  • How funny Landon is in our top two. The other was/is Carson and is my favorite but Dh prefers Landon...
  • Not that this matters in the slightest, but it just popped into my head that the guy from Nicolas Sparks' "A Walk to Remember" is named Landon Carter. Man, I loved the movie in middle school. :-P

Olivia is miles better than Peyton.
  • Olivia is so. Much. Better. Very much dislike Peyton.
