Somewhat embarrassing ER visit...

So, I was at the mall yesterday waiting for DH to finish work when I started feeling a really intense pain in my abdomen. I sat on a bench and found myself unable to stand back up! Scary. Waited for DH so he could help me get up. I just wanted to go home and lie down, but DH insisted we go to the hospital.

We went to the closest emergency room to where we were which is a hospital that doesn't have an ob unit, but I was in so much pain and we had to take the bus. I don't think I could've made it to the other hospital across town. Anyway, I was scolded by two different nurses for showing up in this emergency room instead of the other one.

We waited about 3 hours and by the end of the wait, I started to *ahem* pass some gas and everytime I did I felt a little better, lol. So they finally got me in, I had to lie down so they could do a quick ultrasound (baby looked good, was moving a lot and heart rate was fine). But I felt sooo much better by then. They basically said everything looks okay, follow up with the midwife if anything changes and go to the other hospital next time but by that point I knew that it was probably just gas. Lol. Of course I didn't tell the ER doc that. I just said I was feeling better than I did when I first came in. Which was true.

I'm grateful everything turned out to be fine, but we are first time parents and this is my very first pregnancy, so DH wasn't taking any chances. I assume we're allowed to make a few mistakes like that, right?

Re: Somewhat embarrassing ER visit...

  • I had some gas pains early on that were nearly paralyzing! Started a muscle spasm in my back. It was nuts! I was very close to going to the ER also, but, after about 40 minutes, I figured out what it actually was in much of the same manner you did. Luckily, it was in the middle of the night and I was just in bed. Had I been out, I probably would have been afraid enough to go to the ER. It happens! At least now I know gas pains can get that bad.

  • Totally understandable, I never knew real gas pains until I was pregnant! Those suckers can be brutal.

  • Yes! It was awful! I had no idea it could be so bad. I think part of the problem was that I desperately need to lie on my side to help relieve the pain, but during the entire time (being at the mall, the ride to the ER and the waiting room) I was forced to sit up, which didn't help.
  • I'm glad you're feeling better!
  • Oy - Sorry you had to go through that! I had some really bad gas pains a few weeks ago and like another poster I was luckily at home and in bed. I got up to go the the bathroom and could not even stand up, had to walk hunched over. Man gas pain is the worst!
  • My mom took me to the ER when I was younger (like middle school) for gas once. I remember it was excruciating and I couldn't bring. There was a very visible gas bubble too and my mom thought it was a hernia. Just gas!

  • I had horrible gas pains earlier in my PG too - they actually started at my DS's soccer game and I barely made it to the car I was in so much pain.  I was close to going to the ER too when I figured out what was going on.  Glad everything ended up being okay for you!  And it is sweet your DH is so concerned about you.

  • With my first I had horrible gas pains! They take a little bit to get used to but pretty soon (if you continue to have them) you will figure out quickly what it is. Glad it was nothing serious!

  • I had that happen after I had DD1, it felt like someone was stabbing my side. But it was SO embarrassing because they did an Xray and told me it was just a big ball of gas stuck in me, caused by the pain meds I was taking after the c-section.
    I was mortified!

  • I had horrible gas pains like this about a month ago. We were out to dinner for a friends bday so I had to try to eat while I felt this intense pain getting worse and worse and then fake that I was really tired and get out of there. I could tell it was gas but driving home alone with that pain was awful. Laying down definitely helps

  • I can't wait to get to my car at night after work to let it all out!! A few days ago I was doubled-over in horrible pain and it wouldn't go anywhere and finally I pulled into the driveway and let it out. I felt like a new woman! I've also had to do the eating out with pain thing. It's so uncomfortable.
  • when i was little i was crying because i had a sharp pain in my side so bad, my mom wanted to call the hospital because she though my appendix burst. my dad sat on the couch with me for a while and rubbed my back and whoops! it was just a fart that was too big for my body hahaha
