    I have 2 UO's.

First one... I hate EVERY single day care I have ever been a part of. They don't know how to raise children and for the most part are down right mean to the kids. I also think they don't know how to properly discipline a child. A lot that I have been employed at will scold a child for something but if another does it they disregard the second one. What?!?!? That makes no sense!

Second one...I hate Valentines Day!! I don't think there needs to be one day a year that you treat your significant other with love and kindness, you should do that everyday. Plus I hate feeling like I need to buy chocolates or flowers or those other things for people. I should be allowed to do that out of the blue not on a certain day. Plus I hate those stupid candy hearts with the sayings. They taste awful and are stupid.
    Okay rant over lol

I am prime example of why not everybody needs to go to college. I spent 4 years (3 colleges and 3 majors) and ended up with an associates degree. I couldn't find a job in my field and now I actually SAH with our DS and probably will until #2 is in kindergarten. I've considered opening my own business but it won't have anything to do with my degree.

    .

I'm the same. I did a bachelor's degree in history and a masters degree in American history. I'm a retail buyer. My degrees couldn't be further from what I do. To be fair, i'm doing this job because it pays the bills and not because I want to. If I had the money to do my PhD then I would, but it's just impossible to find the time and money. I would probably be able to find a job in my field (i'm in the UK, which has a shortage of US history tutors), but it would cost so much to actually get to the level i'd need to be, it's just not worth it right now. I feel like I wasted 4 years of my life.

I think it's actually worse for kids to go off to uni/college at 18 and then drop out because they don't like the course. I took 2 gap years and consequently I knew what I wanted to do, so did well at it. That means jack shit at the moment though, as I sit here punching in numbers on a spread sheet and counting down the minutes until I can go home.

Completely agree with this. While I worked (kind of) hard for my degree and am now thousands and thousands of dollars in debt, my DH doesn't have a degree and makes more than I do (sans the debt). I wouldn't go back and change anything about going to school b/c it was honestly the best experience but I don't think it's for everyone.

ETA: and NOW I just want to be a SAHM but I can't b/c of all of the debt. How's THAT for irony?!

To add to the college discussion, I think many people don't realize how many non-combat options there are in the military that will give you training and then the GI bill to pay for college when you're done. My husband, for example, was a nuclear reactor machinist in the Navy for 6 years and is now finishing his degree in the mechanical engineering field at no cost to us.

My related UO, I guess, is that I don't think simply being in the military for 20 years should qualify someone for the ridiculous pension and TriCare coverage with which they can retire. You were an HR specialist in an office from 9-5 until you were 38 and now draw a montly pension plus healthcare for the rest of your life? No.

We're actively trying to leave the suburbs and move as close to downtown as possible. Not that I don't love being surrounded by nothing but chain restaurants and churches.
Yeahhhh... Not only do I love that we're within walking distance of museums, tons of restaurants, science centers, many parks, friends' houses, and the fact that my SS and future kid will be exposed to a pretty diverse population of people with varying worldviews/life experiences... being in the city is also for my own sanity. I grew up in the suburbs, and I find them a bit isolating as an adult.
City girl here too. I would go bonkers living in the burbs. I'm a bit concerned about schools but there are so many benefits for us that it's well worth it.

Completely agree with this.  I know of many apprenticeship type programs or 1 or 2 year programs where people make very good livings.  By way of example, my paralegal husband's is an elevator repairman.  He makes a good living and has excellent benefits.

I also agree with this! My husband is a union carpenter. he makes a great living, and has great benefits. i think he gets down on himself sometimes because he didn't finish college, but really at this point what good would it do? his older brother went back to school recently and got a degree...and he's still working in the union as a carpenter. i got a degree in journalism, and while i wouldn't take back going to college despite having some loans because of the good experience i had, i work in finance and have for 8 years. totally unrelated to my degree!

@ykristos agreed. I grew up in the suburbs of San Francisco, then San Francisco proper, and then moved to downtown Sacramento (which is a funky little place). Now I'm in the 'burbs, like semi-rural 'burbs, and I miss city living so much. While I think the larger cities like NYC or SF have their own challenges that I personally would not want to deal with as a mother (like the school lottery system in SF), I miss Sacramento. It offered the "city living" advantages like public transit, walk & bikeability, cafes, etc. without the big city rents or school problems. I think my perfect situation would be the downtown area of a large but not major city like Denver, Sacramento, Vancouver, Richmond, Portland, etc. Unfortunately my husband grew up in the country and he can't stand the idea of parking your cars on the street every night or not having a backyard. I decided to let this go & do it his way. I did get a nicer house out of it I guess.

Don't know what the point of this was except I miss the convenience of city life soooo much. I hate driving everywhere. I hate knowing our kids will need to be shuttled around. I hate that they will not see more than, like, one person of color in their schools. If we ever move, we will be doing it "my way" next time and living in a central city.

I think stainless steel appliances are ugly.  I like white better.  But just about anything is better than those refrigerators that have cabinet covering on the front... those are really silly.  Like this:

I think people that have out to date tickers are ridiculous.  You found the time to make a ticker so you obviously have the time to update it.  How do you not notice that your ticker says 141 weeks pregnant? come on.
I think those are funny, personally.  Maybe the people don't realize the ticker doesn't automatically convert to "You had your baby and now it's this old."

I think that all convicted child molesters and serial rapists should be forced to have all their external and internal sexual organs removed.

To me, once you do something so heinous to another person -- especially a child -- your personal civil liberties cease to exist.
I don't know that I'd go that far, but I do tend to feel sexual predators should be quarantined from everyone else.  Rehabilitation doesn't seem to work, so letting them back into the general populace seems really irresponsible.

I don't say Merry Christmas to people i know don't celebrate Christmas, because i think that would kind of make me an asshole.

I have friends of all different beliefs, so my cards say Happy Holidays.

you know what REALLY makes me nuts? people who say "Jesus is the Reason for the Season!" uhhh no actually, he's not. The Winter Solstice is the "reason for the season", and people have been celebrating the "season" for a long, long time before Jesus even exisited.

It's sad that people who celebrate Christmas and work retail aren't supposed to say Merry Christmas, but it does seem dumb if people get all "my holiday wins and your holiday should shut up."  It seems like if I say Merry Christmas and you say Joyous Yule or Happy Hanukkah or Festive Festivus back to me, that's fine.

The secondary school system is one of the biggest problems in the "everyone shouldn't go to college" situation. The focus is so heavily on college readiness and vocational programs are the first to get cut. All the "good" school districts boast the high percentage of students they send to college, but you hear nothing of how many of those students end up with worthless (in terms of getting a job) liberal arts degrees. How, at 17 years old, are kids supposed to know what they want to do career-wise when all they've known is math and language arts? So go to college and delay adulthood for another 4+ years. Then when you can't find a job, get a master's degree! IMO, vocational training needs a bigger place in high schools and even middle schools, or else the "everyone goes to college" thing will only keep getting worse.

Agree, 100%. I have a BS in psychology and was going to go to grad school (because you have to to do anything in that field...) lost my financial aid for my OT program when I got married, couldn't fathom an additional $90k in student loans, so...I'm currently a SAHM, trying to decide what to go back to school for so that I can afford to pay back my student loans.

I had a 4.05 GPA in high school, and I honestly wish I hadn't gone to college right away since I had no idea what I wanted to go to school for. What a waste of time and money!

I'm sorry but wasn't Jesus not born on Christmas???? I'm not religious and I don't think Christmas is religious at all. It's about family, Santa Claus, gift giving and eating good food. For our business we say happy holidays just because people are too damn sensitive. I think this is one of those issues where people take something that's supposed to be magical and enchanting and make it something it's not. Ugh it really annoys me.

My Dad always told me that Jesus was not born in December. He has a Master's degree in Theology and religion so I would assume that this is correct.

I do think that it is traditionally thought of by many as a "Christian" holiday, but I agree that it has become so mainstream now that not everyone sees it that way.  I know plenty of people who are not Christian, but still celebrate Christmas.  I actually even have a Jewish friend who even did the tree and gifts, etc.  Her parents did not want them to feel left out when all of their friends were celebrating Christmas.

Where would you draw the line though? There was a story in the news once where two teens were HS sweethearts. He turned 18 a month before she did and her parents didn't approve of him. He is now a registered sex offender, had to drop out of school and move because he lived too close to a daycare. Should he have his sexual organs removed? Technically he was guilty of statutory rape and is a "child predator" even though it was his long time gf. On one hand I want to agree with you times a million but on the other hand there is too much gray area.
No, I get it.  The statutory rape thing is out of control in a lot of these situations.  That's why I specified serial rapists.  There isn't really a good word for the type of child molesters I'm thinking of.

Oh, I agree. Like I said in an earlier post, people can wish me whatever the hell they want. I'm just saying that those special snowflakes who are offended by not being wished a Merry Christmas would probably have a stroke if they were greeted with something to do with a (just as valid and more correctly timed) Pagan holiday. And, as a business owner, my goal would probably be to offend the fewest customers possible (on this topic), even if I personally thought they were total jackasses.

I hate the thought of all the kid specific items, learning toys, videos, toys in general, etc. I think people have become to focused on keeping their kids young and not teaching them things, and not having them play outside, and use their imaginations. Some of my favorite things to play with when I was a kid were the card board boxes that appliances and cabinets came in from building sites because they were so big and they could become anything I could imagine them to be, and I also was taught to read properly by tutoring in the summer between 2nd and 3rd grade with books with minimal pictures so I had to sound out and actually learn the words.

I'm not saying that I don't think that toys and children's books and learning tools don't have their place, but I think that so many people give in to the idea that their kid needs every little thing under the sun. My mom bought so much crap for my sister's 5 kids and spoiled them rotten, and I think half the things never even got used, or got used once, and then was ruined and never used again. My sister hated all the crap and even now my mom has said she wishes she hadn't bought them so much "stuff". And getting rid of most of that stuff now the kids don't even miss it.

I have some more Christmas UOs! For starters, I think it's crazy that people buy their very young children a shit ton of presents for Christmas. It seems really wasteful. The kid doesn't know the difference. Developmentally, I think getting 15 toys is overstimulating for a toddler. We have been making a huge effort to reduce the number of toys in our house because little kids just play better when they have fewer options (and less mess/toy clutter, yay)! Plus I would rather spend $50 on a few things and put the rest of my Christmas bonus into her savings account. On a similar theme, it's likely that we won't "do" Santa in our house. We live in a diverse area and my kids are going to learn quickly that some kids get a lot for Christmas and some get very little. Plus DD also insists that Santa is NOT coming, so why go to all the effort to convince her otherwise? We will find other traditions to make Christmas magical.

I think the movie Elf is the most annoying Christmas movie ever made.  I've tried watching it like 3 times to get what the hype is about but it's just terrible.
This one doesn't bother me as much as my most dreaded Christmas move "It's a Wonderful Life". Yea sure it's been nominated for Oscars and is recognized for being this amazing movie, but still... Not.A.Fan.

Totally agree, @evenstar1611! We also rotate toys so she can rediscover old toys rather than bringing more into our house. I refuse to buy anything that requires batteries. Her grandparents buy her more than enough of those, and they are also responsible for many creepy middle of the night noises.

Trick or treat has been cancelled in my area tonight because of rain. I think this is ridiculous. It isn't supposed to downpour - just sprinkle and be windy. When I was a kid (grew up in this area) we trick or treated in the rain and snow. So trick or treat has been moved to tomorrow. What about the parents who work at night who took a vacation day or switched shifts to take their kids tonight? Oh and there are a bunch of places in the area that do indoor trick or treating. If you don't want your kids to get wet go to one of those places. Did anyone else's get rescheduled?
