Baby Names

Brett??

We are team green- due at the beginning of dec. pretty well set on a girls name. DS is the 4th so his name was easy to come up with once he was born but this is difficult!! DH seems to like Brett - I'm a teacher and it's not a tainted name for me but I'm not sure if I ever thought I would have a child named Brett! Any thoughts?

Re: Brett??

  • Personally I don't really care for it. It just seems plain and blunt to me.

  • It's ok.  I prefer Brent-- I think it's a little bit softer.

  • Bret is a boy. Brett with two ts is a girl. I knew a few male and female Bret / Bretts growing up and they all followed this rule. Even if you hate Brett on a girl I would be wary of using that spelling on a boy. I would stick with the unquestionably masculine Bret.

  • My FIL's name is Brett. I like it, I do like Brent better, although both are NMS. But I think it's a good name and a little bit throwback (it seems very 70s to me), but not in a bad way.

  • I associate Brett with a jock-like type of boy.  I'd put it in the same category as Todd, Chase, Scott, Tyler, etc.  That said, it's not a name I would use but I like it.

I have never heard of Brett as a female name. Out of curiousity I checked SSA and the only time it registered for girls in the top 1000 was in 1986, at #917. It has ranked as a male name every year since 1946, peaking in 1986 at #69. I think most will assume Brett to be a boy regardless of spelling.

I was thinking this too, knowing I'm not alone makes me think I'm not as crazy as I thought

Put me in the prefer Brent group

  • I'm not a fan. No real reason, it just isn't a  name I'd pick. But I wouldn't side-eye it

Ha ha- I'm in my early 30s and the Bretts I knew were born in the late 70s and early 80s. However, the SSA does not account for the fact that a lot of the "Bretts" and Blairs I knew growing up had a common first name like Elizabeth or Amy but went by their middle name. I think the name was popular in the south and among New England and NY WASPs.

  • I have a cousin named Brett - he is 31 I think and the only Brett I actually know.  I like the name (but am obviously partial).  I think Brent is a nice variation too.  I love the name Rhett but I think that is a little harder to actually pull off.
