Just for nanda. What are you getting your kids for Christmas?

And have you already started shopping.

Re: Just for nanda. What are you getting your kids for Christmas?

  • DD is 14 months...I'm not exactly sure what to get her. Play kitchen? Work bench? Doll house? Do 1 1/2 year olds play with those things yet?
  • An anywhere chair
    Potterybarn polar bear rocker
Book of a bedtime story DH and I wrote for her (illustrated with pictures of her dressed up)
    Books
    Wooden puzzles
    Blocks

The PB polar bear rocker is on back order until November and I'll wait to get the chair but I've gotten the other things and a couple things for her birthday.

I started Christmas shopping last month. So far I've bought all three kids some books, the older two some craft/DIY stuff, and LO the discovery sounds garden and sports center, a drum full of musical instruments, the little people barn and a puzzle. SD wants a bean bag chair or one of those big round chairs (idk what they're called!) for her room and 1D stuff. DS1 wants Minecraft stuff and Lego. I'm going to buy some family board games too.

I got DH Blue Rodeo's new CD and concert tickets. Since for the presale tickets you could only do will call and not have them mailed to you, I plan on attaching a little note to the CD that says "Learn these songs now, because we'll be hearing them live in February!" or something. I'm so excited about seeing his face when he opens it.

Oh, and clothes for the kids, like usual.

  • Not a ton because he'll only be a few days shy of 1, he'll have a huge birthday party a few days later and he won't remember anyways.

So far I've bought a stand up ball popping walker thing and a ball pit with balls. (Sounds like I really like balls, huh? TWSS.) I'll probably get him a few books and puzzles and call it good. He has a ton of people that will buy for him and we have a small house.

  • I have absolutely no idea. :(
  • So far I got B one of those old school chatter phones, and some sorting blocks. I'm going to get him pj's for Christmas Eve.

We're going to be away for most of the winter so whatever I get him will be for when he's a bit older, so I want to get him things for then. Would a little kitchen be okay? He'll only be 9 months at Christmas but again, we won't really be home much until he's like 14 months.
  • Yes, I've started shopping/planning. I've bought a couple of books so far. Santa is buying DS the new Imaginext City Center, and a Sofia the First dress up trunk for DD.

We're buying the kids Turbo and Little Mermaid DVDs, respectively. DS is getting a piece for his each of his Imaginext city, castle, and pirate ship sets. And DD is getting a pretend play beauty salon set and something else TBD.

I need to come up with gift ideas to give my mom and the ILs for DD...otherwise I'm done, besides the purchasing.

  • I have already started shopping as I find good deals.  As of right now we have LP Disney castle, LP nativity, LP wise men, a book, mega blocks, and FP rocking giraffe.  I know for sure I will be getting her a zany zoo, a baby doll and a first Christmas ornament.  I am sure I will go buy her more things as well.

  • I've thought of a couple things for DD- I think we are going to do a play kitchen, books, she loves tea parties and picnics- so something to do with one of those. I haven't even started shopping yet. I have no clue what to get DH though...?
  • A train set, a train activity mat, and some books.

I'm not sure what'll be in his stocking yet. So far, I've got crayons, Hot Wheels, and a little Thomas.

DD1 magnetic dress up dolls, play food, magna doodle

    Both magna tiles
I also got DD1 a mellissa and Doug birthday cake set and DD2  a shopping cart for the "baby" to give them.

I think we're going to get a bike for Ava. She mastered the tricycle last spring and has had her eye on the bicycles (with training wheels) other kids in the neighborhood have. Now I just have to find one that's not covered in pink/purple/glitter/princesses. Let me know if you have any recs ( @letranger ).

I of course know a lot of gender neutral bikes butttt this one is nice and pink and probably more money then a non bike person spends.

For the record I myself own a pink bike with a pink bell :)
I would spend that if it'll last her for a while. How does that work with the components as they grow? Do you just get larger wheels? Oh, and her tricycle is a pink Schwinn (with chrome tires) so I could be persuaded to buy pink as long as its not character-covered vom pink ;)

Is this at me? I'd go broke if I didn't limit myself. I don't wanna go back to work, so I limit myself, but I didn't preach...
What? No, not at you. Pretty much every year we get someone who says the above or something similar and then we all feel sorry for their child(ren). I've been wondering if it would happen in this thread,is all.
  • I'm done as of yesterday!

DS is getting a wooden marbleworks, gears building toy, dr kit, Lincoln logs, a couple board games, play food and accessories for the play kitchen, a train wash for his train track and the planes DVD.

DD is getting her very own ergo for her baby dolls, a few stuffed princesses from the Disney store, a flower building green toys set, duplos, Cinderella DVD, wooden puzzles and the klip klop castle with accessories - girl is obsessed with it.

They are both getting plasma cars and a play kitchen from my Mom.

    I love Christmas morning!
  • How do you decide how much to get them? Do you have a price or a toy limit? If they want one really expensive thing, do you get a bunch of $1 toys just so they have presents to open? Just curious what other people do.

For example, if you got your a kid an ipad but that maxed out your budget for gifts, would you just buy some little stocking stuffers to wrap or just teach them to be happy with the one gift?

It depends.  Flame away, but both of my kids are getting isomethings for Christmas. But they are three and one -- there are still some developmentally appropriate toys we would get anyway just for age appropriate play and learning.  And even if that wasn't the case, I'd still wrap up socks or pjs or something they could rip open.  That is a good lesson, absolutely, but I am not sure a necessary one at their age.
No flames from me. I-whatevers are not my hill to die on, I think they can be beneficial. I'm just curious how people decide what/how many to get.

  • The only things I know for sure

DS: Imaginext rescue center, Sneaky Snacky Squirrel Game, Dusty t-shirt

For me, this year we had a budget per kid and they will each unwrap 13 presents. Some big like a marble works and some small like a pack of little people. We wrap almost everything. That doesn't include the plasma cars and kitchen that will be put together OR gifts from grandparents.

My kids are only 3 and 1 so they get tired of opening things and just want to play. We will see how they do this year and adjust next year as needed.

@auroraloo I got DDs play kitchen at a garage sale for $5.  I have seen pretty awesome deals on CL as well.  Check around.  My city also has a FB garage sale and I've seen a few on there, but more importantly people can post 'In Search Of' (ISO) items.  You might find a good deal that way.  DDs didn't come with any accessories, but that's what grandparents are for :)

If you hand a kid an iPad, they won't care about any other gifts.  I promise.  :)

I'm sure, lol. It was just an example. Mine is too young for one anyway.

We've always bought Trek bikes...love them. Of course, DD doesn't ride them, but that's another story.
  • So far Logan is getting a train table w/ assessories, linkon logs, play food and warm pjs. I want to stuff get some new bath stuff anda few more toys.

My extended family never tells us what they are getting for him so it is always a surprise.

  • I'm buying DD some stuff from HearthSong, rainbow loom stuff, a new pair of Uggs probably, some clothes and so far those are my only ideas. Came up with them today as I lie here dying on my couch with a cold. Santa gives all the good stuff in our family.

Santa is bringing PMW an activity gym and some other little toys and his stocking will be filled with pacis and whatnot according to DD. We give stockings, so she's ready to help with his.
  • We bought him a woody doll, books, clothes and other little things. santa is bringing him a city rug complete with wooden cars and building pieces.

This year we had a price budget for each kid.  I also wanted to get them the same number of gifts.  We spent roughly the same amount on each child but I wasn't super strict on it.  I made sure that I didn't go over what I could spend on both combined.  They are so close that they'll both play with all the toys anyway.  Generally the pricier toys I do as Santa gifts and split them.  If one child wanted a fancy game system, it would probably depend on their age.  If they are big enough to understand I would just get them the expensive gift and maybe some other small ones if money allows.  I would also explain to them in advance that if they do get the whatever that they will not get much other stuff for Christmas.  Would they still want this?  If they are too little, I would definitely make it even for all kids by getting them small toys.

  • DH wants to get the girls ipads but imo that is not in our budget and they will be just as happy with a lot of smaller things.  They both got laptops last year or the year before that they hardly use.
  • DS' birthday is in a week. I'll worry about Christmas after that...

I don't really have a limit, gift or price-wise. This year, I'm spending less than $100 and the only thing he'll be unwrapping is books.

I don't go overboard because a) he doesn't need anything b) we have a small place and c) he gets a ton of stuff from other people.

I'm also limiting myself this year because for the past two years, I've purchased a big gift and then a bunch a smaller toys so that he'd have stuff to open. He would either open one toy and get distracted by it or just lose interest all together, and I'd end up unwrapping everything.

And I'll be the obnoxious one to say that I want him to learn that Christmas isn't about the quantity or cost of gifts. My ILs go way overboard and my nieces and nephews are spoiled brats. They count and compare gifts, rip them open and barely regard them, and don't acknowledge the gift giver. I don't want Christmas to turn into that.

  • For Hanukkah she is getting:
Loving family doll house, pet room set, nursery set, bedroom set, tag reader, book, small duplo set, barrel of monkeys game.

    For Christmas:
finger paint, small playdoh set, pattern blocks, dry erase crayons, soccer ball, some small action figures

I am sure there may be other small dollar store items---I am only done with the Hanukkah shopping. I am so excited--I didn't want my parents to buy her more "stuff"--so there gift to her is a good quality wooden block set, she LOVES to build and I would rather that then little plastic crap throughout the house :)
