1st Trimester

39 and crossfitter

Any other 1st tri crossfitters out there? I am not sure if I should continue scaled on weight and intensity or just go to planet fitness for a couple Of months to increase cardio and insurance and light weights. Planet fitness seems so boring....

Re: 39 and crossfitter

  • Generally, moderate exercise is fine, especially in the first tri.  Call your doctor's office and get their suggestions on how to adjust your workout, and give their info to your trainer.  If your trainer won't work with you to find a set of safe exercises, you probably should find a new place anyway.
  • As long as you have been doing cross fit for a while, you should be fine. I do not but my coworker would go on and on about his wife doing cross fit while pregnant. He would show me websites of pregnant cross fit moms too. I would discuss with your doctor to get confirmation.

  • I do a similar style fitness routine (it's basically crossfit mixed with weightlifting) and plan to continue for at least the first trimester. I am also a marathon runner and will be running a marathon in 3 weeks when I am 8w1d. If you already have a good base level of fitness, you should be fine for the first trimester (or so I have been told and read) maintaining the same level of intensity, or scaling to be safe like you mentioned. But of course, ask your doc first and foremost!

I am was an avid crossfitter until last week when my then 6 weeks pregnant body said no more. You just have to listen to your body. Do what you're capable of doing, don't try to PR, and above all else be safe, ultra cautious. My body just said no way, It was during an 8 minute amrap with as many 250 runs as possible, that I received my first "did not finish" rating on the white board. My body just had enough, it felt as if each step forward was an act of congress and I decided to stop about 5 minutes into it. I might keep attending just to cheer for my buddies and enjoy the camaraderie until I feel up to it again.

I'm currently bummed that the sport I love so very much has been replaced with my new favorite sport, laying on the couch watching netflix. I'm hoping that things get a little more normal after first tri, only 5 weeks to go for me!
  • I used to crossfit and do something similar now.  As long as you've been doing crossfit before you got pregnant, you should be fine to continue.  Are you familiar with Chris Powell from Extreme Weight Loss?  His wife, Heidi Powell is an avid crossfitter and it 8 months pregnant.  She blogs and answers a lot of questions about working out while pregnant.  her website is www.heidipowell.net Sorry, I can't make it clicky... Maybe someone else can do it?

  • I crossfit 3x a week and plan to continue as long as my body lets me. I spoke to my doctor at 6 weeks who gave me the "go-ahead" to continue my routine. She said that as long as I listen to my body and scale my workouts accordingly, I will be fine. She encourages me to stay fit throughout my pregnancy and recommended that I speak to my coach about ensuring I modify the workouts as I grow.
My crossfit coach has worked with a handful of pregnant crossfitters in the past and basically said that the first trimester you can continue the workouts but just try not going up in weight or trying for PR's. Second and Third trimester will be scaled because of the growing belly. He also recommended I look into https://crossfitmom.com/ because they have scaled WOD's based on trimester and once I start growing, he'll be having me do their WOD's.
I'm almost 13 weeks pregnant now and have been feeling great...I've kept all my lifting on the lighter side but can still keep up the intensity, I will definitely continue. Good luck!
  • My new favorite sport is eating and sleeping as well. I joined planet fitness ... ughhhh and boring but worth it in the end.
I did light snatches the other day and decided I just don't want to...
my friends said it will be there when i get back... i trust in that...

  • I'm 9 weeks along and Crossfit 3-4 days a week. Couldn't imagine giving it up. No one at my box knows yet (except the coaches) but I am bursting at the seams to tell! For now I haven't modified much except no PR's and staying off the GHD. My coach says they have had quite a few pregnant gals in over the years, one who went to 2 days before her due date!
  • I haven't CF'd since my BFP as I have been feeling SO crummy. I'm scared to go back and "start all over" but I miss the workout "high" and the soreness through my muscles to remind me I "did" something... I feel soooo lazy doing the bare minimum but it will be there when I go back. Whether it's soon, or post baby..

  • Don't feel bad rachelnjacob, I haven't gone since my BFP 5 weeks ago. I had some cramping in the beginning & then have been constantly nauseous since then. Thankfully I think it is calling down, and I am planning to go back soon.

The website redma726 mentioned (https://crossfitmom.com/) is awesome my trainer is using it as a guide for me!
