Coats and carseats

Help me out, car seat experts!

Charlotte has this coat.  (Bought at a consignment shop for WAY less than sticker price.)

This would NOT be car seat safe, correct?  I adjusted the car seat straps about a centimeter to put her in wearing it.

Should I get her something like this for car rides, and just save the Patagonia down jacket for playing in the snow?

Other question: do hoods on jackets affect car seat performance, meaning I should get a non-hooded jacket and have her wear a hat, or can she wear her hood up in the car seat?

Re: Coats and carseats

  • We just plan to warm up the car, do a sweater or fleece and blanket and put the coat on him when we get wherever we are going. I don't see your pics. It is probably my dumb phone's fault though. In any event, we inherited a down Hannah Anderson coat from my sister and a down North Face from someone else. I'm not buying another coat and honestly don't feel comfortable with anything thicker than a fleece. I have never heard anything about hoods but that doesn't mean anything, I guess. Carseats are so tricky.

Then and now. How did my boy get so big?

  • We just warm up the car.   We have some lighter cardigans and such that I put on here if it is really cold.   Most of the time we just put a blanket on her after she is buckled in.

  • Since we keep our cars in the garage, we'll mostly be strapping him in without a coat and then putting one on when we get to where we need to be.  If necessary we'll flip his bulky coat and put it on backwards after he's strapped in as recommended in the link below. I found this helpful.

  • I had a thin fleece jacket that I used for DD in the car seat, but I kept having to adjust the straps, so I stopped using it altogether.  I warm up the car in the garage before we leave in the morning, so I don't need to bundle her up.  When I take her out of the car and go into daycare, she's only in the elements for like 5 seconds, and that's not going to do any harm.

  • I put a thin hoodie on DS for car drives and wrap his coat around him for the short walk into daycare in the mornings when it's chilly. I wouldn't put the coat on in the carseat.

  • It hasnt gotten too cold here yet, but I think I will just do a fleece mostly, and wrap him in a blanket for the walk to the car when it gets really cold.  I hate being bundled anyway so I rarely wear a coat, and I am fine, so I figure he will be too.  He has a fleece and a hat.

  • I put a fleece hoodie on DS for the car and run out to a warm car.  I keep the hood on his head in the carseat otherwise it takes up space behind him and is very uncomfortable.

  • I got a fleece jacket similar to this one. I figured I would put this on DD when we are going out and take a blanket with us if we need. Then I got a puffy coat for playing out in the snow.

  • that ones not safe for the car seats as pp's have said but OMG SO CUTE!! def great for outside!
Thanks!  Paid $30 secondhand for the coat and snow pants combo.  Ours isn't that print, but similar style.  I think it's from a few years ago.
  • Just picked up a fleece poncho for T and my niece as a friendly way to tell my sister to stop putting her in the car seat in bulky coats. I plan on putting the hood up every time for comfort.  Someone on here mentioned a poncho the other day and I thought it was such a great idea because you can put it on them in the house and to the car, then just put it over the car seat and buckle them, and flip it back down.

  • We got a 4 in 1 Coat. He wears the inner fleece jacket the majority of the time and in the car. Then he has the big puffy outer piece to go over the fleece for playing outside and stoller rides.
