1st Trimester

Very newly pregnant!

Hi everyone. I just took two hpts this evening and both of them are positive! I am two days away from my due period. I'm in shock! Anyways what are my next steps? I called the doctor just to ask and they said you won't be seen for 6-8 weeks! How is that possible?? So do I just wait it out? I don't feel like I have any symptoms. I feel like I have pms which I thought I was. How do I know how far along I am anyways? The nurse on the phone said my last period start date of sep 27 would make me have an appt the week of nov 8th. Just confused and overwhelmed right now! Any help/guidance sent my way appreciated!!

Re: Very newly pregnant!

  • I took a test on Sunday night and it was positive and I went into the doctor to confirm and I am pregnant and I went Monday and was 3 weeks and 4 days. You just wait it out until your appointment

  • Also just a side note, when would I tell family/friends? I'd like to wait until after the doctor to be sure all is ok, but that seems forever away!! I wouldn't tell work for awhile but would want my parents and husbands parents to at least know.

  • It's normal for them to want to see you then. I went in around the same time. D the next day they checked for the heartbeat with the ultrasound. That's when it's the easiest to see an they can accurately measure how far along you are. Congratulations!!
  • My first appointment was scheduled for 12 weeks (last pregnancy).  I called this time to have my hcg levels checked (monitored) and she hasn't scheduled me for an appointment yet.  I go in on Monday for testing.  yay.  Welcome!

  • Congratulations!  My Dr. office does not routinely see people until you are 8 weeks.  I went in at 4 weeks though because of some cramping and spotting.  I am 6 weeks 3 days now and have my first actual OB appt tomorrow.  I know the waiting is terrible, just try to take it one day at a time!
  • Thank you so much ladies!! I appreciate the positive words! Do I have to go in earlier to confirm the hpt or do I just set up the appt at the 6-8 week mark like they said?

I would just call and make an appointment. :)

  • Congrats. They'll normally do an ultrasound at your first visit, that's why they want to wait until around 8 weeks.
If you have a normal 28 day cycle, then you would be 4 weeks on the day of your missed period.

  • Oh ok got it. Do I have to worry that the tests weren't accurate at all? My period isn't due for two days but both tests showed positive very quickly! Do you start to feel exhaustion at this time? I'm a teacher and completely wiped!
  • Congratulations! I wouldn't be worried about your tests not being accurate, a false positive is pretty rare... And since you took 2 and they were both very clearly positive, I'm sure you have nothing to worry about there. As far as symptoms go, your feeling of having pms.. That's normal! You'll have very few symptoms this early, most not even very noticeable. I started my symptoms at 6 1/2 weeks, some ladies don't even get noticeable symptoms ever (I know several women who felt great throughout their whole pregnancy). So.. Good luck with everything and seriously enjoy the crap out of knowing you're pregnant!

  • There's nothing doctors can do at this point anyway. It would just be a urine test, which is usually less sensitive than the ones you already took, and a chat about pregnancy. First appts. are tpyically between 8-10 wks. They don't always include ultrasounds, that depends on the doctor. If you have questions or issues, though, you can still call them.

  • Oh thank you!!
  • You don't always get an ultrasound at your first visit, it is something you have to ask your doctor and see what your particular office does. I didn't go in until 8 weeks and it was just a urine test. They don't try to listen for the heartbeat until your second appointment. With my first, I never had any symptoms, this time I've had horrible symptoms. You'll have to wait and see what happens. It is up to you when you want to tell people.

  • Ditto PPs, if you are a low risk pregnancy, there's really nothing for the doctor to do at this point anyways.  Just start taking a prenatal vitamin if you aren't already, stop drinking/smoking, and that's it!  Your EDD is based on the first day of your last menstrual period, so that will tell you how far along you are (there's a EDD calculator on TB's main page).

Keep in mind that many doctors only do one u/s the entire pregnancy, which is at 20 weeks, so even though you'll see the doctor (usually monthly) before that, you might not get to see your baby until then.  When you schedule your first appointment, you can ask your doctor what their u/s schedule is.

As far as symptoms, some people get them right away, some not until several weeks in, and some not at all.  The amount of your symptoms is not an indicator of the healthiness of the pregnancy, so if you don't get any morning sickness, be thankful, not worried!
  • So the doctor in the office near where I live told me I had to wait 8-10 weeks to make an appt. I wanted to change doctors only for location purposes. I love my doctor but thought closer would be better. Then today I called my regular doc who is about a half hour away and they told me to come in right away for a urine test and blood test. Why did they want to see me right away for those tests, while the other place didn't? I have to say, I liked it much better and I got more confirmation!! I was worried since the positive line I had gotten on the ept last night had disappeared by this morning. Feeling cramps today too. Is this normal?
  • Most low risk pregnancies you wait until 8 to 10 weeks for a first appointment.

  • My first appointment was 5 weeks and it was just a urine test. My next one is next Tuesday at 10 weeks and I will be getting blood work done and will be hearing a heartbeat.

    It's a BOY

  • I had a positive pregnancy test and I went to the doctors 2 days later to confirm and get info. But my first real appointment was at 8 weeks where I got examined and had an ultrasound to confirm how far along I was. You determine it off of the start of your last period. It's completely normal to not have the first appointment until about 8 weeks. Before that they can't see anything on the ultrasound anyways. Symptoms come and go so don't base anything off that.

^^^This. I had an ultrasound at 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and 18 weeks. I had a couple more later on but only because I had preterm labor and ended up in the hospital.
  • Congrats mommy to be:)
