Halloween Costumes

This "problem" may sound silly. It's not even a real serious problem, but I want some other mommies' opinions at the moment. I have a (just turned) 2 year old and 7 month old. I decided to get them silly costumes this year, not cutesy kiddy costumes..... my girls are going to be sushi and soy sauce, and my husband and I are going to be the sushi chefs. I saw the costumes on Etsy, and thought they were hilarious. (and my hubby and I are huge sushi fans) Before I bought the costumes, (which are great and so well made) I asked other mommies in my playgroup if they thought my 2 year old would care that she is dressed up as a piece of sushi as opposed to a princess, mermaid, etc. They all said this would probably be the last year I could get away with it, so I just decided to go for it. I figured we would have years of Halloweens where my daughters get to choose their own costumes and be cutesy. I figured this would be funny. My mom is kind of old fashioned and doesn't really think outside of the box, and as soon as I told her about the sushi costumes, she was against it. She couldn't understand why I wasn't dressing the girls in cute kiddy costumes instead. Tonight she made me feel pretty guilty and was telling me how all the other kids are going to be running around, having fun in their costumes, and my daughter is going to have no idea what her costume even is. So now I'm just feeling badly and like I should have chosen something my daughter will be excited about. What do you think? Honestly?

  • Thanks for the response. My mom tends to overreact, so I brushed off her initial comments. For some reason, now with Halloween getting closer, I'm second guessing my decision. I do like the idea of ordering sushi this week to connect it all! Thanks for that :)

  • Meh. I wouldn't get all worked up over it. Your mother's comments are pretty ridiculous.

  • I wouldn't worry about it. It will make for a great family photo that your kids will "get" someday if they don't quite understand now! Enjoy it and have fun!

  • By age 2 my DD knew what sushi was and would request it for dinner. Hook him up with some veggie rolls or snowcrab rolls (DD's favorite) and edamame so he can share in the yummy fun. Ask if the restaurant can make or has the kid-friendly chopsticks. Also a big hit in our house.

  • Overthinking. I chose my 2 year old's costume this year. He really has no idea what Halloween is. Whether I dressed him up like a monkey or a toilette bowl I don't think he would act any different. It's your kid so don't feel guilty. I am sure your mom chose things for you that you wouldnt agree with but didnt have a choice back then.

  • Do what you want to do!

My friend's DH found matching red track suits and he is dressing himself and their two kids up as the Royal Tenenbaums. Their DD, who is 2.5 probably has no idea what their costume is (maybe athlete?), but they are going to look cute all together.

  • Your mom is being a twit. I would not even think twice about their costumes.

My daughter (3.5yrs) would TOTALLY know what your kids are, and would wish she could be sushi too!  She LOVES sushi, and even likes to make it.

  • I wouldn't worry about your mom.

We chose DD's costume based off of her absolute favorite character (Jessie.) Mostly because she is starting to enjoy dressing up--and we have no dress up clothes, so we figured that the Halloween costume she will wear to dress up in.

Needless to say since she got it, she hasn't taken the costume off :)
