Talk me down--cherry hemangiomas

DS has a little red bump on his head that's been growing for about two weeks. Dh says it looks like a cherry hemangioma and that it's harmless, so we were just watching it.

Now DS is complaining about his head boo-boo so we're off to the pedi tomorrow. I wasn't anxious at all about it until it started bleeding today. Not heavily, just enough i need to clean it twice a day.

I'm not normally a wimp about blood but I'm having trouble looking at his head right now and the words of one of the other residents keeps echoing in my ears, "they'll just nip it right off".

I feel so anxious about this and a little woozy. It's an over the top reaction for a bitty thing but I can't stop obsessing. I'm so glad the appointment is 9am.

Has anyone had one? Has anyone's child had one?

  • I'm a lurker but my son had something similar on his chin when he was about 7 months old. I took him to the dermatologist and it was a pyogenic granuloma. They just numbed the area and took it off. It was a pretty simple and easy procedure although it's always traumatic for the moms!

  • I have a few, on my upper stomach. I hate them and think they're ugly (because I see my dad's stomach when I see them - I swear his were in the exact same spot), but they don't hurt. If they get scratched its common for them to bleed a lot.

John had a pyogenic granuloma in his mouth. That thing bled like crazy. It was right on his gumline against his front tooth. Dentist said it would go away on its own. Until it did we just looked like a horror movie, since he sucks his fingers and they would get bloody and then he'd grab things.

Hopefully it's just something minor like one of them. Gross, creepy, even scary to look at, but benign anyway.
