38 weeks pelvic floor prolapse

I'm 38 weeks and I went to the OB emergency department with contractions and intense pain and pressure in my bottom and vagina. I was having irregular contractions a wasn't dilated only a little soft. The doctor told me my pelvic floor was prolapsed. Has this happened to anyone else?

  • No experience, but sounds like you should be doing lots of kegels ;)

My LO is 4.5 months old now and I was diagnosed with a bladder prolapse at 3 weeks PP. I had never even heard of prolapse before so it was a big shock. It felt pretty awful till about 2.5 months PP, but now I hardly notice it. It is still visible if I look with a mirror, but I can no longer feel it. It used to be a never-ending tampon-falling-out feeling. The good news is that prolapse associated with childbirth usually corrects itself within a year of delivery. When I was first diagnosed I was very upset about it but it gradually got better. So don't worry too much about it and just enjoy your last few weeks of pregnancy and your new baby!
Oh, and most doctors will tell you to just do a bunch of kegels, but if you do any research, you'll likely read that kegels don't do anything for prolapse.

  • I'm just worried that the pushing associated with labor will make it worse and the pressure and pain is getting unbareable.
  • I think pelvic floor prolapse is different than other types, bladder or uterine for example. I have a friend who had a hysterectomy after child number four because of uterine prolapse. I guess you should ask you doc about the implications of your current condition.

  • Contact your health insurance provider to ask if they can recommend a doctor or physio who specialises in women. After the birth of my 2nd child I felt like I was going to pee myself all the time which is a sign of a weak pelvic floor. The physio provided me with different exercises to strengthen my pelvic floor. I found it really helpful.
