Male midwife made me feel crazy.

I've been experiencing BH contractions since 16/18 weeks. In the last two weeks (30 wks now) they have become more frequent regular and intense. I'm on procardia and have been in to L&D 3x in two weeks in ea instance the contractions have been more intense and ea time they have increased my dose of procardia (all of this seems to happen at inconvenient times like 2/3am) anyways the contractions make my belly look deformed, they're pretty reg, and if I let them go they make my thighs and back sore. But they don't seem to be affecting my cervix and if they are it's only minimally. So each time I leave L&D after a shot to stop the contractions, and upped dose of procardia and a feeling of the girl who cried wolf. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm so scared the one time I ignore it it's going to be the time that they are effective contractions and it will be too late to stop labor and these girls still need some time to cook. Can anyone relate? Am I over reacting? Are these contractions normal? I'm speaking w my doc tomorrow but I really just wanted to see if all twin mommies experience these types of contractions so early?

Re: Male midwife made me feel crazy.

  • And yes it was a male midwife who attended to me today....he told me I was a "contracter" and there was nothing I could do about it....and kind of ridiculed me for my frequent visits.....annoying.
  • Hey--you're fostering human life, don't give it a second thought about going in. What does the midwife care if you go in frequently--he'd be at work regardless! I read a blog written by a L&D nurse who said you don't get frequent flier status until you hit your 80th visit, so don't feel bad.
I went in more than a few times for contractions and ended up having to stay for a weekend. I felt shy about going in, but it was a good move in the long run. I seriously feel no shame at having been cautious and I don't think you should either. Better safe than sorry and any real nurse / doc should feel the same.

  • Don't feel crazy for going in.  It's hard not to worry about what is going on in there when you're having contractions.  And if you're a first time mom you don't know what "real" contractions feel like until you have them.  I thought I was over-reacting when I went into my doctor because I had ONE very sharp pain that made me double over.  Well, it turned out that I was in PTL and needed to be wheeled to the hospital for a 2 month stay before giving birth.

You do what YOU have to do to keep your babies safe.
  • It makes me mad that he made you feel bad for coming in....that is unprofessional at best and dangerous at worst. Sure, what you're going through happens often in twin pregnancies (I had a similar situation) and it could just be ineffective contractions....or it could be PTL...and how are you supposed to know the difference? You did the right thing by going in; carrying twins is a big deal, and contractions are a big deal.

GL and hang in there.....this stretch can be so rough, but you're almost there! :)

  • My OB always told me to come in if I was worried. He said it was mostly for me to feel comfortable and know that everything is okay. He also told me I would probably end up in L&D 6-10 times before my babies were born. He said if I went in, got monitored for a few hours, and went home that would be a win because it meant my babies were staying in a little longer.

    Yes, yes, and yes.

I was in L&D at least once a week for contractions from week 22 until I delivered at 29 weeks (I ruptured at 28 weeks). I wasn't sure I had ruptured -- I honestly thought it was just urinary incontinence. Nope. It's nothing until...it's something.

Keep doing what you're doing. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT stay home if you think something is up. Always, always, ALWAYS call and head on in! :)

  • Thanks ladies I had a nice long talk w the doc this am he agrees w you ladies (and so do I) always better to go in and get the contractions stopped. Also he's giving us steroids on Monday/tues bc of the frequency of the contractions and my size (measuring 37 weeks and 5 ft tall not a whole lot of room left) I have another growth scan on wed I'm excited to see how big these girls are. Thanks for the feedback, sometimes it's just nice to hear I'm not alone.
