5 weeks and insomnia

I've been dealing with insomnia for over a year now and have relied on meds a lot of times to help me get to sleep. Now that I'm 5 weeks pregnant I haven't taken anything to sleep but I'm having a really hard time falling and staying asleep. I took Benadryl for the first time last night. I'm really opposed to medication during pregnancy but I need something for sleep. Everything I read online says Benadryl is safe for pregnancy. Any thoughts? Ideas? Thank you

Re: 5 weeks and insomnia

  • Since I was a baby I've had insomnia.  I've had sleep specialists tell me to take benadryl I don't even know how many times.  My current OB told me to take benadryl if I need it to sleep, but he set a lower limit than what I normally used.  I don't have a job, so I almost never take it, but if I got more than 3 days without sleep I will take it.

  • Mine has been terrible. It's usually due to anxiety, so there's not much I can do. I'm thinking of trying unisom.

Unisom is (at least the versions I've seen) diphenhydramine.  Benadryl is diphenhydramine except like half the price.
